The Chicago Cubs notched a fifth straight victory in Friday’s 7-2 home win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, collecting at minus 116 odds.

Saturday’s MLB betting has the set resuming with a duel of right-handed starters, matching up Chicago’s Jeff Samardzija (3-6, 2.85 ERA) against Arizona’s Ian Kennedy (2-3, 4.70 ERA).

Cubs, Hairston open with spark

Chicago’s victory in Friday’s opener saw three homers cracked by the Cubs, including a grand slam from outfielder Scott Hairston.  Chicago’s David DeJesus and Starlin Castro united to hit 2-for-7 from their lineup’s top two spots, while mate Anthony Rizzo poked his 17th double of the year.

Arizona’s Miguel Montero and Didi Gregorius drove in one run each, with Montero finishing 2-for-4.  Diamondbacks outfielders Jason Kubel and Cody Ross were held to a combined 0-for-7, while the matchup’s nine runs ducked UNDER the ‘total’ of 11.

Samardzija notched his second win in three starts with Monday’s 7-0 triumph for the Cubs over the Chicago White Sox.  The sixth-year hurler held the White Sox to two hits over a complete nine innings (108 pitches), while logging eight strikeouts.

Samardzija shuts out Chi-Sox

Cubs outfielders Julio Borbon and Alfonso Soriano drove in two runs each, uniting to bat 5-for-9.  Borbon struck out three times from the leadoff spot, while mates Ryan Sweeney and Darwin Barney went 0-for-7 from the lineup’s bottom two spots.

Kennedy falls short in Colorado

Kennedy has been idle since May 21, recovering from a finger injury.  The 28-year-old gave up three earned runs in six frames as part of a 5-4 defeat for Arizona to the Colorado Rockies, picking up a no-decision as a 116 road dog.

Arizona’s Martin Prado drove in two of his side’s runs, finishing with a 1-for-4 night.  Diamondbacks leadoff man Gerardo Parra went 0-for-4, while he and his mates were edged out in hits, 10-5.

Back the OVER at Wrigley opened Samardzija as a 129 home MLB oddsfavorite, while first setting the ‘total’ at 9 ½.  The weather forecast in Chicago calls for a 75 degree night, with calm winds blowing outward and a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms.

I am adding the OVER here to Saturday’s sports picks, looking for more slugging in this set to continue.

Chicago has hit .285 against right-handed pitching at home, racking up 6.2 RPG in its last nine spots at Wrigley Field.  The OVER is 7-3-1 in the Cubs’ last 11 home dates against right-handed starters.

Arizona shelled Samardzija for five runs in last June’s 6-1 win over the Cubs, poking seven hits over five innings.  D-Backs mates Jason Kubel and Miguel Montero have a combined 3-for-6 career mark, including a homer and triple between them.

The OVER has cashed at 5-1 in Kennedy’s last six starts facing Chicago, while going 4-1 for Arizona in its last five matchups against listed righties.  Hairston’s hot day for the Cubs on Friday could carry over here, with one homer in six career at-bats against Kennedy.

Umpire Joe West has seen the OVER cash at 3-2 in his last five called games, with a 2-0 mark as part of that span’s pair of matchups in National League parks.  Look for the OVER to get the money again here.
