You can lock down the Yankees at +112 or so at the sportsbooks , with the Red Sox favored in the -120 to -125 range.
The MLB odds total is at 9.5 runs, which is line with what we were expecting, as Ryan Dempster and C.C. Sabathia have been far from dominant this season.
Alfonso Soriano's return to the Bronx Bombers has made a huge impact on the team's stuttering offense, but the Yankees were cooled off by John Lackey in yesterday's defeat. Hiroki Kuroda picked up the loss.
Now it's C.C. Sabathia's turn in the rotation. The southpaw has been all over the place this season, making it hard for handicappers to trust the Yankees whenever he's on the mound.
Sabathia is 10-10 with a 4.66 ERA and 1.33 WHIP overall, while going 3-5 with a 5.35 ERA in 77 and 1/3 innings out on the road. Not the best numbers there.
To boot, Sabathia has not done well against the Red Sox in the past. He's 9-10 with a 4.45 ERA in 25 starts against Boston and is 3-4 with a 4.93 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in his career at Fenway. The Red Sox have hit .305 against him at home.
The lefty definitely needs to sort out whatever control problems he was having in his latest start. He pitched well overall but allowed six walks – that can't happen against a very opportunistic Red Sox offense.
Boston Red Sox
For those Red Sox fans that were beginning to worry about the team's four-game losing streak, you had to feel much better after yesterday's 6-1 win.
Can Ryan Dempster give Boston at least six solid innings tonight? He did just fine in Toronto five days ago, holding the Blue Jays to four hits and one run in seven innings on the road.
However, Dempster hasn't been strong whatsoever against this Yankees team. In two appearances against them this season he's given up 11 hits and six earned runs in just over 10 innings of work.
Since the All-Star break, Dempster has given up 32 hits and 18 earned runs in 29 and 2/3 innings. He's been saved by some great run support out of his offense, but we're starting to wonder if we'll ever see the Dempster of old again.
It's going to be interesting to see how the veteran handles a Yankees offense that's been revitalized over the last couple of weeks.
We don't know why this line is as low as it is. Sabathia is a high-profile name, but his performances this season have left a lot to be desired.
Taking his past struggles at Fenway into account, we believe there's value to be had in an MLB pick on Boston here. The Red Sox are always going to get up for these games against the Yankees, regardless of how far behind their opponents are.
You've got to like what Soriano's presence in the lineup has done for New York, but we trust Boston more on the offensive front and feel the home team will be able to win out in what could easily turn into a runfest.
Pick: Boston Red Sox -120
