Although the total for this game is set very low it makes perfect sense when the New York Mets take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in game five of the NLDS Thursday Night.
MLB odds makers have this line is at six on the total which seems just about where it should be set. For my MLB pick of the day I'm going to back under this low total as I think both pitchers are primed for an excellent performance. Right now you can still get pretty good odds on under the total at Pinnacle -103.
New York Mets
Jacob deGrom takes the mound for New York and comes in with a 2.54 ERA, 0.98 whip, 205 strikeouts, and a 14-8 record. He was outstanding in the first game of the series allowing zero earned runs off of five hits in seven innings. It was the only time he has faced the Dodgers and I don't think they are going to get to him in this game either. There's only been a few times this season where he has really gotten knocked around, but he is not coming off of short rest and should be well geared up to pitch a great game.
Offensively the Mets hit .244 as a team, average 4.23 runs per game, and hits for in OPS of .711. Their batting average on the season is one of the worst in the major leagues. Except for game three in which they exploded for 13 runs, the Dodgers have held them in check on the offensive end with Kershaw and Greinke, even despite the game one win. I simply don't think they are going to have a productive day at the plate.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Zack Greinke gets the start for the Dodgers and comes in with a 1.66 ERA, 0.84 whip, 200 strikeouts, and a 19-3 record. In his last game against New York he pitched extremely well but gave up two solo home runs for the only runs produced by the Mets. His line on the game was solid allowing just five hits in seven innings. In his two starts together this year against New York he has a 1.29 ERA allowing those two runs in game to, along with eight total hits in 14 innings. New York is hitting just .167 against him in those two games.
On the offensive side Los Angeles hits .250 as a team, average 4.11 runs per game, and hit for in OPS of .736. Their OPS is ranked in the top 10 in the major leagues but after that there is not a lot to shout about. They have been decent offensively in this series, but have also had troubles. They do hit better in Los Angeles, but like New York I don't anticipate them having a lot of quality at-bats.
This sets up to be an amazing pitcher's duel with a trip to the National League championship on the line. Expect both pitchers to have exceptional starts and look for this game to go down to the wire. For one of your MLB picks I suggest backing the under and expect a low-scoring affair.
