We’ve hit 7 straight games with our MLB Picks of the Day. Let’s try to continue the pattern as there a full slate of games to choose from on this NFL Draft Thursday.
The Yankees and Blue Jays open up a 4 game series at the Bronx and New York would like to forget about the beating that pitcher Alex Cobb inflicted on them on Wednesday night.
The Yanks could barely touch the Boston, Massachusetts native as he pitched shutout ball en route to a 3-0 victory over the Bombers. The Yankees had a problem making contact all night off of Cobb.
Same Team, Different Venue
This is a somewhat of a rematch as the Jays and Yanks recently met in Toronto. The Yankees took 2 of 3 in Toronto, but these teams played fairly even.
New York sends Huroki Kuroda (2-1, 2.35) to the mound while Toronto starts Mark Buehrle (1-0, 5.87). This is a pitching rematch of April 20th in which the Yankees defeated the Blue Jays in extra innings, 5-3.
Both pitchers pitched well; Kuroda gave up 1 run in 7 1/3 innings, showing pinpoint control while Buehrle gave up 2 runs in 7 innings in the no decision and also showed great control. The one negative regarding Buehrle is that he carries a 1-8 record with a 6.03 ERA in 13 career starts against New York. Can he come up with another solid performance against an undermanned Yankees team?
The Momentum Factor
Toronto should have the edge offensively as they’re coming off of a productive win against the Orioles in which 4 different players homered.
The one thing that I noticed from the Yankees and Blue Jays in their first series was the play of Edwin Encarnacion. Encarnacion was making great contact with the ball, only to get robbed by Vernon Wells twice.
Look for Encarnacion to have a good series. He’s a lifetime 3 for 12 with 1 HR and 4 RBI off of Kuroda. For the Yankees, this is the guy to handle carefully.
The MLB odds are very reasonable as New York is a -142 betting favorite and the total for the game is 8. I have a lot of confidence in Kuroda; he’s the Yankees hottest starter.

How crummy must the Marlins be to have the Cubs come into their house and be the -118 betting favorite? This is simply pathetic!
That said, the Cubs offense is a disaster. They couldn’t manage to score a single run in a 1-0 loss to Cincinnati yesterday. Jeff Samardzija put up a great performance, only to be bested by Mat Latos.
The Chicago Cubs rank 28th in the league in runs scored, 26th with a .229 team BA, and 28th in OBP (a .282 OBP isn’t going to win many games). This a real opportunity for the Marlins to pull off the mini-upset at home.
The Cubs start veteran, Edwin Jackson (0-3, 4.84) while the Marlins send Kevin Slowey (0-2, 1.90) to the mound. The Marlins have a major edge here. While Jackson is barely getting through 5 innings and giving up around 5 runs per start, Slowey has kept the Marlins in every single game; the Marlins offense just hasn’t rewarded him.
In 4 starts this season, the Marlins haven’t scored more than 2 runs in any outing for Slowey. He’s given 4 quality pitching performances and gotten little in return.
Someone has to score here and Miami is coming off of an 8-5 victory over Minnesota on Tuesday. Miami has some legitimate hitters in Gioncarlo Stanton and Justin Ruggiano. Stanton has been in a super-slump, but played well in his last game against Minnesota in which he had 2 hits, 2 runs, and 2 RBI. Stanton is also a lifetime 2 for 4 with 1 HR and 2 RBI off of Jackson. If there was a game to hit his first dinger, this would be it.
This is a good spot for Miami, and a great place for us to add the Marlins to our sports picks as dogs. Their starting pitching and the Cubs’ inability to score gives the Marlins the edge as the home underdog.

Good Luck and let’s knock’em dead!
