The Mariners (34-45) and the Cubs (33-44) are separated by just ½ game, let's review our MLB picks for this interleague matchup.
First pitch is set for 10:10 pm ET tonight at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington.
MLB odds currently lists the Mariners as a -150 betting favorite with Hisashi Iwakuma (7-3, 2.26) taking the mound for the M’s.
Iwakuma has been nothing short of brilliant and the Mariners can have confidence when the Tokyo, Japan native takes the mound every 5th day.

The Mariners had a Japanese talent in future hall of famer, Ichiro Suzuki, and now the Japanese media engulf Safeco Field as they attempt to catch a glimpse of the right hander Iwakuma. Iwakuma isn’t a wet behind the ear rookie; he’s a 32 year old pitcher in his prime.
That said, the Cubs are catching Iwakuma at an opportune time. He’s had 2 consecutive poor performances against Oakland in which he allowed 8 runs and 14 hits in 12 innings pitched. Iwakuma picked up the loss in both games and looks to bounce back against a Cubs team that’s very beatable.
The Mariners are coming off of a 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh. The one positive thing that they can take away from it is the play of Raul Ibanez.
Ibanez is 41 years old and still hitting for power. He deposited his 18th home run and 43rd RBI in the outfield stands against the Bucs. Ibanez will never hit for average, but he has the knack for the big hit.
The Cubs are coming off of a 7-2 victory over the Braun-less Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubbies don’t have a distinct superstar on the team; Anthony Rizzo has shown ability, but his .253 batting average is far from Trout-like.
This is a team in which someone different comes up big in victories. Against Milwaukee, the hero was Dioner Navarro as he smacked a 3 run home run in the 3rd inning. This team has improved slightly, but still has a ways to go if they’re to compete with teams of the caliber of the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cubs send Travis Wood and his 2.85 ERA to the mound, but he’s lacked the run support and this needs to change for Chicago to beat Iwakuma and the Mariners. In Wood’s last 5 starts, he hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a ball game and only has 1 win to show for it.
Cubs are 8-2 in their last 10 interleague games
Over is 4-0 in the Chicago’s last 4 games
Mariners are 25-7 in their last 32 home games vs. a team with a losing road record
Mariners are 5-2 in their last 7 games in interleague play as favorites
Under is 5-0 in the Mariners last 5 games as a home favorite
These teams certainly aren’t familiar with each other. You give the Cubs the advantage in the offensive department, but the Mariners get the nod with Iwakuma starting. Look for Seattle to eke out a victory in this highly contested, low scoring game game.
