MLB Picks: Bronx Cheer To Red Sox Since Indians Are In It To Win It

The clubs have split the first 2 games. After losing 6-2 in their home opener, Cleveland responded with a 7-6 victory last night. Look for the Tribe to be the MLB pick of the rubber match.

The Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians complete the 3rd of their 3-game opening week set with this 6:10 ET start in Cleveland. As noted in yesterday’s analysis, the prediction from this bureau is that the Red Sox will not make it to their projected 87 wins. They remain an overpriced team, who has cracked the .500 barrier only once in the last 4 years.

Tonight’s starter, Kelly, was traded to Boston by St. Louis at the start of last season. A poor first half of the season found him demoted to the minor leagues. Upon his return, he pitched far better. In his last 9 starts, Kelly went 8-0 with a 3.00 ERA. Due to injuries, he has made few quality starts in the first half of the season. Figure him to be untrustworthy tonight.

Cleveland remains an underrated team, who has been greater than .500 each of the previous 3 seasons. Again, they are projected to be a winning team, battling the defending Champions, Royals, for AL Central supremacy. At the heart of their success will be a trio of top flight arms. After facing Kluber and Carrasco the first 2 nights, the Red Sox now draw Salazar. In 30 starts last season, Salazar was a solid 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA. This included 2 victories last season against the Red Sox. Most impressive was the fact that Salazar produced 195 Ks in 185 IP of work.

Final Analysis
My early season projections continue to favor the improving Cleveland Indians against a Boston Red Sox team, whose value is based more on perception than reality. Until the Red Sox begin to have a record that is commensurate with their price, we will continue to fade them. Yesterday, we used Cleveland on the runline (an eventual loser in the Tribe’s 7-6 victory), in which they wasted a 5-2 midgame lead.

Tonight, we will settle for a money line play, as the pitching matchup is not as strong as was having the opportunity to fade Buchholz who, as predicted, was pounded early by Cleveland. This is a solid opportunity for the Tribe to win this early set on their home field and set a positive tone for their season.

The Boston thoughts may be turning to division rivals a top-ranked Toronto then Baltimore, whom they face in their next 9 games.I invite you to put the MLB odds in your favor and join me in my MLB pick on the Cleveland Indians tonight.
