After a long chase the Orioles have finally been eliminated from playoff contention. The Blue Jays, on the other hand, have been playing out the string in a very disappointing season for some time now. How can we make money in this late-season game?

Thursday's Series Finale

The birds of the AL East meet for a series rubber match Thursday evening at Camden Yards at 7:05 p.m. ET. While the O's and the Jays are dead in the playoff races, they'd both like to end the season on a good note. How might we make a little money with our MLB picks in this game?

Thursday's Betting Lines

As of Thursday morning, MLB odds were chalking Baltimore and Miguel Gonzalez at around -135 over Toronto and Mark Buehrle, with a total of eight.

The O's could also be gotten at around +155 on the run line at various MLB betting shops.

Thursday's Game Three Set-Up

These two teams have split the first two games of this series, Toronto winning Tuesday 3-2 in 10 innings, Baltimore winning Wednesday 9-5. That victory broke a six-game losing streak for the Orioles, who had scored just 13 runs total over that span.

A day after being eliminated from playoff contention, the O's sat regulars Adam Jones, Matt Wieters and Brian Roberts Wednesday, then hit four homers anyway.

Bettors might want to check the lineup card before doing anything too serious with today's game.

These two teams have split 18 meetings so far this season, with the totals going 11-7.

Thursday's Pitching Match-Up

Gonzalez (10-8, 3.94), by our tough accounting, is 11-for-27 on quality starts this season, and only one for his last five. Last time out he gave up three runs in six innings against Tampa, and over his last five starts he's allowed 15 ER through 28 1/3 innings.

During the season Gonzalez has given up 155 hits in 164 innings, walked 52 and whiffed 115.

Baltimore has won 14 of Gonzalez' 27 starts this season. In four starts previously this year against Toronto Gonzalez has allowed eight ER and 18 hits in 24 1/3 innings; the Orioles split those four games.

Buehrle (12-9, 4.09) is 17-for-32 on quality starts this year, and six for his last eight. Last time out he held Boston to one run through six innings, and over his last eight starts he's allowed more than two ER just once.

For the season, the veteran lefty has allowed 215 hits in 200 innings, walked 51 and struck out 138.

Toronto, a team that's 14 games under .500 this year, is 19-13 in Buehrle's starts. In two starts this season against Baltimore Buehrle has given up 10 ER and 15 hits in 11 innings; the Jays lost both those games.

Jays-O's Betting Trends

  • Baltimore is six games over .500 overall this season, but just 25-26 against left-handed starters.
  • Toronto is 53-63 vs. righties this year.
  • The ‘Over’/’Under’ is 34-37 in games played at Camden Yards this season.
  • Over their last 13 games, the Jays are 3-10 on the totals.
  • Over their last 12 games, the O's are 3-9 on the totals.

Jays-O's Injury Report

Baltimore is without Manny Machado, who suffered a nasty knee injury hitting first base a few days ago. He's now resting until Spring.

On the other side of the lineup card Toronto is without both Edwin Encarnacion (wrist) and Jose Bautista (hip), who also won't be seen until next Spring.

Our Take on Thursday's Game

We'll give Gonzalez a short edge in the pitching match-up, but we're also not sure just who will be in the lineup for Baltimore tonight; it might be a skeleton crew. So instead of going with a side for our free sports pick for today, we'll look toward the total and go with the ‘Under’.
