Texas has been one of the hotter teams in baseball over the past couple of weeks as they head into take on Justin Verlander and Detroit today. Can these two productive teams score enough to get over the total?

Texas Rangers

A.J. Griffin takes the mound today for Texas and comes in with a 3.15 ERA and 1.02 whip and is having arguably his best season in his three year career. Currently Griffin sits at 4-0 but is currently coming off his worst outing of the year allowing four earned runs and seven hits in just five innings versus Oakland. Although the Rangers have won every game he has pitched this season there is no reason for me to believe he is not going to come in and get knocked around just a little bit against a Detroit offense that can light up the scoreboard at times. On the season themselves Texas is only hitting .236 as a team and averaging 7.74 hits per game ranking them 26th and 27th in the major leagues respectively. Despite those poor numbers they have found ways to score averaging 4.81 runs per game which ranks 12th in all of major league baseball and they have some decent power numbers ranking eighth in home runs per game and slugging .409 as a team ranking them in the middle the league. They should be able to garner enough runs today even against Detroit’s veteran starter.

 Detroit Tigers

Justin Verlander takes the mound for Detroit and comes in with a surprising 4.47 ERA and 1.43 whip well above his career 3.49 ERA and 1.19 whip. Perhaps he is getting up there in years just a little bit with this being his 12th major-league season pitching both hot and cold outings so far this season. The good news for Detroit fans is that he does pitch really well at home which puts for me this line in question as it looks a touch too high. Earlier in the season he a had a really bad outing versus Cleveland which has ballooned his overall statistics but the main issue for him has been bases on balls and I think today he will give Texas enough opportunities to put a few runs up on the board. At the plate I expect Detroit to have a big day although they are hitting just .247 on the season which ranks them right in the middle the league. Their OPS and other statistics rank closer to the top 10 or better and their average run totals go from 4.65 on the road to 5.21 at home.

MLB Odds

Oddsmakers have come in saying the total for this game at 8.5 and for my MLB pick I’m going to back over the total. Griffin, I don’t believe is quite as good as his numbers currently indicate and big V is not immune to giving up his share of runs at times. Expect both offenses to come to life today.
