Monday’s MLB action has the Detroit Tigers opening a three-game road set with the Chicago White Sox, who send southpaw Chris Sale (10-12, 2.97 ERA) against Tigers righty Max Scherzer (19-2, 2.88 ERA).

Detroit enters tonight's matchup with a 1-4 slump over their last five matchups, while Chicago returns home after a 1-9 road trip. Which team will have the upper hand in tonight's series opener?

Check out our Monday Morning MLB Odds & Betting Lines Report.

White Sox end losing streak

Chicago ended its journey away from home with Sunday’s 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, cashing at plus 188 MLB odds. White Sox slugger Adam Dunn drilled his 31st homer from the cleanup spot, while mate Dayan Viciedo logged one RBI in a 2-for-4 day.

Detroit ended its week on a different note, losing as 115 road ‘chalk’ in a 5-2 defeat to the Kansas City Royals. Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias gave his club an early 2-0 lead with a long ball, while Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera were held to a combined 0-for-8 mark.

Sale stingy in New York

Sale logged a no-decision in Tuesday’s 6-4 setback for Chicago against the New York Yankees, failing to cash as a 130 road dog. The Florida native held New York to two earned runs over 7 1/3 innings, allowing five hits.

White Sox relievers Nate Jones and Donnie Veal picked up a loss and blown save, respectively, uniting to give up three late runs. Chicago’s Alejandro De Aza and Gordon Beckham united to hit 5-for-7 from their lineup’s top two spots, while Beckham logged one of his side’s two errors.

Scherzer outdueled at Fenway

Scherzer logged his first loss in nine starts on the same night’s card, with Detroit falling in a 2-1 defeat to the Boston Red Sox. The 29-year-old gave up both of Boston’s runs in a seven frame stint, falling at plus 100 MLB odds.

Detroit’s Omar Infante and Austin Jackson came away with 2-for-4 nights, while outfielder Matt Tuiasosopo struck out three times. The Tigers edged out Boston in hits, 9-6, while the contest’s combined three runs plunged UNDER the ‘total’ of eight.

Back the UNDER in Chicago

MLB odds opened Scherzer as a 142 road favorite, while initial MLB betting on Chicago dropped the price to minus 138. The ‘total’ was first set at seven, with MLB betting sites adding a minus 120 tag to the OVER.

I am backing the UNDER in this spot as part of Monday’s MLB picks, looking for both starters to go deep in a close contest.

Scherzer has allowed three earned runs or less in every road start this year, with the UNDER going 5-2 in the most recent seven outings away from home. The sixth-year hurler has held his road opposition to a 0.86 WHIP and .233 OBP, while facing a White Sox club that has notched just 2.6 RPG over their last seven duels.

Sale has done his part for Chicago, with the UNDER cashing at an 8-4 clip in his 12 home starts. The stretch includes a pair of outings against Detroit, holding Jim Leyland’s club to four earned runs over a combined 17 innings.

Detroit has seen the UNDER collect at 4-1 in its last five road spots against a left-handed starter, while the same wager is 7-2 in Chicago’s last nine matchups that followed a victory. Look for these tight trends to hold up here, getting the money again for UNDER backers.
