Yankees, Rivera blow lead
New York logged a 2-1 defeat in Sunday’s action to the Baltimore Orioles, with closer Mariano Rivera giving up a late homer to Baltimore’s Adam Jones. Yankees shortstop Eduardo Nunez drove in his side’s sole run, while the Yankees saw a six-game winning streak end as 121 home favorites.
Kansas City also came up short on the afternoon’s card, spanked in a 10-4 loss as a 118 home dog against the Oakland Athletics. Royals mates Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler united to leave nine men on base, with Kansas City was edged in hits, 15-10.
Hughes ends skid in Minny
Hughes notched his first win in four starts with Tuesday’s 7-3 victory for New York over the Minnesota Twins, cashing as a 102 road dog. The 27-year-old allowed one run over seven innings, giving up six hits.
Yankees slugger Robinson Cano cracked his 20th homer, piling on three late runs for a 7-1 lead. New York’s Alberto Gonzalez logged three RBIs, finishing 2-for-4 from the lineup’s No. 9 slot.
Guthrie collects at home
Guthrie came away with a no-decision in Wednesday’s 6-5 win for Kansas City as a minus 108 home choice against the Cleveland Indians. The 10th-year hurler lasted 6 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on five hits.
Kansas City’s Eric Hosmer drilled a go-ahead homer in the seventh frame, while he and his mates finished with 11 hits. Royals closer Greg Holland tossed two strikeouts in the ninth inning, picking up his 18th save.
Back the Royals as road dogs
MLB odds opened Hughes as a 144 home favorite, with early wagers on Kansas City dropping the line to minus 137. The ‘total was first set at a flat nine, while action on the UNDER moved its premium to minus 115.
I am adding Guthrie and Kansas City to my sports picks for Monday’s card, looking to steal this opener at a plus price.
Guthrie has held foes to eight earned runs over his last three road starts (19 1/3 IP), while Kansas City is 16-3 in the veteran’s last 19 starts against clubs with winning records. The Royals’ bats have driven in 4.9 RPG over their last three road sets en route to a 6-5 record among the span’s 11 contests.
Hughes has had his share of overvalued spots, with another one looming here. Kansas City’s lineup hung six runs on the righty in May’s matchup against his arm, including homers from Royals mates Mike Moustakas and Jarrod Dyson.
New York is 2-6 in Hughes’ last eight spots as a favorite, while Kansas City is 6-0 in its last six games that followed a defeat. Look for the Royals bounce back from Sunday’s setback here, picking up a victory over Hughes here.
