The Phillies kick off the second half of their season today, as they travel to New York for a date with the Mets. Where should bettors look to place their MLB picks in this showdown?

The Philadelphia Phillies finished their first half with a 6-2 run over eight home dates. Friday’s MLB slate has Charlie Manuel’s club opening a road set with the New York Mets, with Philadelphia’s Kyle Kendrick (8-6, 3.68 ERA) facing New York’s Jeremy Hefner (4-6, 3.33 ERA) in a matchup of righties.

Check out our Friday Morning MLB Odds & Betting Lines Report.

Phillies, Mets heat up

Philadelphia ended last week’s surge logging a 2-1 mark against the Chicago White Sox, with all three duels decided by one run. Phillies outfielder Darin Ruf homered in Saturday’s opener as part of a 3-for-4 day, while second baseman Chase Utley ended the set drilling his third double in six games.

New York returns home after going 6-3 in a nine-game road trip, outscoring its foes by a combined margin of 49-33. Mets veteran Marlon Byrd had one of his club’s hottest bats, drilling three long balls en route to 10 RBIs.

Hefner outdueled in Pittsburgh

Hefner came away with a no-decision in last Friday’s 3-2 defeat for New York as a 134 road dog against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 27-year-old allowed two runs over seven frames, giving up one homer as part of three hits surrendered.

New York’s Eric Young and David Wright each poked a double, uniting to bat 4-for-10 in the 11-inning battle. Mets reliever Gonzalez Germen logged his staff’s loss, giving up a walkoff single to Pittsburgh’s Jordy Mercer.

Kendrick stingy at home

Kyle Kendrick notched his second win in four starts with Thursday’s 3-1 victory for Philadelphia over the Washington Nationals, cashing as a 126 home dog. The Houston native lasted seven innings, giving up Washington’s sole run on five hits.

Philadelphia’s Domonic Brown cracked one of his side’s five doubles, finishing 2-for-4 from the cleanup spot. Phillies relievers Antonio Bastardo and Jonathan Papelbon logged a hold and save, respectively, holding the Nationals hitless over the final two frames.

Back Philly on the road

Bet365 opened Hefner as a 117 home favorite, with the MLB odds driven to minus 108 after early action on Philadelphia. The ‘total’ was first set at a flat eight, while initial UNDER wagers added a minus 115 tag to its side.

I am agreeing with the early ‘steam’ here, adding Kendrick and the Phillies to my MLB picks tonight. Philadelphia is 6-3 in its nine meetings with the Mets, including a 3-0 road sweep as part of April’s schedule.

Kendrick has a 2-0 mark in his pair of starts facing the Mets, holding Wright and Co. to two runs over a combined 15 frames. Philadelphia is 5-4 in Kendrick’s nine road starts, with the hurler holding foes to just four homers over 59 1/3 IP.

Hefner has logged his share of tight outings, but has not matched up well against some of Philadelphia’s bats. Phillies mates Jimmy Rollins and Domonic Brown have a combined career mark of 9-for-15, including four extra-base hits, while slugger Chase Utley has one homer in eight at-bat’s.

New York has been held to a .222 BA at home against right-handed pitching, while going 2-6 in Hefner’s last eight starts at Citi Field. Philadelphia is 4-0 in its last four matchups against a righty starter, while cashing at 4-1 in the team’s last five spots as an underdog.

Look for the Phillies to come out on top in this opener, adding another cashed ticket to their 11-4 mark in Kendrick’s last 15 starts against National League East clubs.
