We’re going to examine today’s MLB Interleague game between the Giants and Astros. Read our highly informative MLB betting preview article for this contest that includes with a selection on the total.
Defending World Champs in the Lone Star State
The Giants and Astros will meet for an Interleague battle on Wednesday at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The first pitch is slated for 8:10 PM ET. According to the MLB betting odds at Bookmaker, Houston is a -125 money line favorite, and the posted total is 8.5.
The Giants will send 39 year old veteran Tim Hudson to the mound on Wednesday. Hudson has been a tad bit shaky over his last three starts, posting a lofty 4.98 ERA, and allowed 5 home runs in 21 2/3 innings pitched. Since the start of the 2005 season, Hudson is 9-20 in 32 Interleague starts, and had an unimpressive 5.64 ERA during those outings.
Brett Oberholtzer will make his 2015 starting pitching debut for the Astros tonight. Oberholtzer was on the disabled up until this point, due to a blister on the index finger of his left hand. The 25 year old southpaw has made two rehab starts at AAA Fresno. He went 1-1 in those two outings with a large 7.88 ERA. Oberholtzer went a dismal 5-13 in twenty-four starts for the Astros in 2014, and posted a 4.39 ERA.
Starting to resemble defending World Champs
The San Francisco Giants were off to an awful 4-10 start to the 2015 MLB campaign, and have since turned things around. San Francisco has gone 13-6 during its previous nineteen games. Their bats are coming alive as well recently. The Giants have hit a stellar .286 as a team over their last seven games.
Astros coming back down to Earth
Unlike today’s opponent (Giants), Houston began the season in scintillating fashion, going 18-7 during their first twenty-five games. However, since that time they’ve dropped six of their last eight. The Astros are hitting a paltry .144 as a team over their last seven games, and that’s obviously been a key contributing factor during their current funk. On a positive note, they’ll be facing a starting pitcher (Tim Hudson) tonight who’s been prone to giving up the long ball over his last three starts. That’s good news for an Astros team which has socked an extremely impressive 46 home runs in their first thirty-three games of the season.
MLB Totals System
The Giants are coming off an 8-1 win in the series opener on Tuesday at Houston. San Francisco enters today with a team slugging percentage of .376 on the season. The combination of the previous result, and that offensive statistic, provides us with a very successful totals system which has surely passed the test of time. That powerful handicapping tool will be weighed in heavily when making my MLB picks for Wednesday.
Any National League road team (Giants) with a total of 8.5 to 10.0, that has a team slugging percentage of .390 or less, and scored eight or more runs in their previous game, resulted in that road team going 49-19 (72.1%) over the total since 1997. Those 68-games averaged a combined 11.4 runs per game outing.
MLB Pick: Play Giants and Astros to go Over the total of 8.5 at BookMaker.
