Sunday’s MLB betting has an evening finale between the foes with San Diego’s Edinson Volquez (4-5, 5.20 ERA) squaring off with Toronto’s Ramon Ortiz (1-2, 5.01 ERA).
Padres hold on at Petco
Saturday’s latest win for San Diego came by a 4-3 margin as a 109 home dog, with the Padres edging out the Blue Jays in hits, 12-11. Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera drove in two runs, finishing with a 3-for-4 night.
San Diego’s Luke Gregerson logged his first save of the year, giving up one run on three hits in the matchup’s final frame. Toronto’s Adam Lind and Colby Rasmus notched one RBI each, with Lind poking a homer and double.
Volquez stingy in Seattle
Volquez picked up his first win in four starts with Tuesday’s 6-1 victory for San Diego over the Seattle Mariners, cashing as a 101 road dog. The Dominican Republic native allowed one run over 7 2/3 IP, giving up four hits and three walks.
San Diego’s Alexi Amarista and Jedd Gyorko both cracked homers, while mate Chase Headley poked a double as part of a 1-for-5 outing. Padres designated hitter Carlos Quentin finished 2-for-4 from the cleanup spot, leaving no men on base.
Ortiz returns to starting
Ortiz made relief appearances for his most recent two outings, surrendering a pair of homers each time over a combined 5 2/3 frames. The 40-year-old made three starts prior to those affairs, giving up six earned runs over that span’s 14 1/3 IP.
Ortiz has not faced the Padres since some relief work with the Chicago Cubs in 2011, allowing one hit over just 14 pitches of action. The veteran has not made a start at Petco Park since 2006, leading the Washington Nationals to a 6-2 victory as 152 road dogs.
Back the UNDER in San Diego
Volquez opened as a 125 home MLB odds favorite at TheGreek.com, lifting to minus 128 after early MLB betting on San Diego. The ‘total’ was first posted at 8 ½, with the UNDER’s premium moving to minus 120 after an initial lean of 115.
I am adding the UNDER in this duel to Sunday’s sports picks, looking for another low octane affair between these foes.
Volquez settled back down this week after a pair of prior affairs saw the hurler shelled for 10 runs over two starts. The 29-year-old faces a Blue Jays squad that has been held to a .234 BA against right-handed pitching on the road, while the UNDER is 6-1 in Volquez’ last seven home starts against clubs with losing records.
Ortiz has been inconsistent, but has some favorable history against some of the Padres’ bats. The veteran has held San Diego’s Chase Headley and Nick Hundley to a combined 2-for-9 career mark, while giving up just one run in his sole road start this year (5 IP).
The UNDER is 4-1-1 in Toronto’s last six interleague road games, while umpire Angel Hernandez has had the UNDER cash at 8-2 in his last 10 interleague spots. Look for UNDER backers to get the money again here.
MLB Pick: UNDER 8 ½ for your MLB picks.
