Tonight, the Cubbies face the somewhat disappointing San Diego Padres. See who we think has the edge and makes it to our MLB picks for tonight.

First pitch is set for 9:10 p.m. ET tonight at Petco Park in San Diego, California. According to 5Dimes Sportsbook, the Cubbies are a -111 betting favorite and the total for the game is listed at 7 runs. This game can be seen on the MLB Network.

Destruction of Despaigne
Cubs starter, Kyle Hendricks, has been lucky to get run support and has been nothing to write home about, but Padres starter, Odrisamer Despaigne (2-2, 6.75) is coming off of a beating in his last 2 starts.

In these starts against the Nationals and D'Backs, Despaigne has allowed 15 runs and 20 hits in jis last 8 innings. The Padres haven't used him in a starting role for the entire season and he's had trouble getting on track This is a pitcher that will keep the flow of the game going  as he neither strikes out batters and walks batters. San Diego, who is 1 game under .500, will need to get their offense going in order to win this game. This has been a low scoring season and obviously, they can't expect much out of Despaigne.

The only thing positive in this pitching matchup for the Pads is that Kyle Hendricks (0-1, 5.15) isn't much better. He's had moments of competence and the ability to strike out the opposition, but Chicago will be lucky to get 5 to 6 innings out of him tops. Opposing batters are hitting .274 against him. With such a lack of quality of pitching in this game and a low total of 7 runs, one would think that this game would go over the total, but that's not totally reliable as sometimes these teams haven't been reliable offensively and Petco Park is a "pitcher friendly" park as witnessed in the first two games of this series. The MLB odds are placed correctly as I would have to favor the Cubs. Odrisamer Despaigne has given the bettor absolutely no reason to back him and the Padres.

Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant
Clearly, these are the main boppers in the lineup for the Cubs. While Rizzo has had a more established career, Bryant is just getting his feet wet and is expected to be the next Mike Trout or Bryce Harper.

Bryant tore it up in spring training only to come back down to earth when he was sent to the minors. It was a short stay at the lower level and although Bryant took a longer time than expected to hit his first home run as a major leaguer, his hitting has improved as the season has progressed. For the season, Bryant has 4 HR, 25 RBI, .291 BA, and a.416 OBP%. I expect him to just get better on the pro level and he could be a factor in this game against a very demoralized pitcher in Despaigne.

As for Rizzo, it has taken a couple of seasons, but he's right where he wants to be. His team is finally winning and he's tearing the cover off of the baseball. For the season,he has 8 HR, 23 RBI, .333 BA, 9 SB, and a whopping .460 OBP%. As long as he stays healthy and pitchers like Jon Lester continue to pitch well, the Cubs are in the correct direction in breaking their streak of over 100 years without a World Series Title.

The over seems appealing, but I don't trust the ball park. I don't trust Despaigne even more, especially after a couple of disastrous starts. Take the Cubs as your MLB pick and to win this series.
