Find out why our handicappers are backing the St. Louis Cardinals with their MLB picks in tonight's matchup against the Cincinnati Reds.

The St. Louis Cardinals have cashed at 7-2 over their last nine contests, driving in 5.1 RPG. Monday’s MLB action has Mike Matheny’s club opening a three-game home set with the Cincinnati Reds, who send right-hander Mike Leake (11-5, 3.12 ERA) against Cardinals lefty Tyler Lyons (2-4, 5.09 ERA).

Cards, Reds end with losses

St. Louis saw a streak of four wins snapped with Sunday’s 5-2 defeat to the Atlanta Braves, falling as a 122 home favorite. Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig hit 3-for-4 from the cleanup spot, while Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday poked one double each.

Cincinnati also failed to cash on the same card, losing as 152 home ‘chalk’ to the Milwaukee Brewers in a 3-1 setback. Reds slugger Joey Votto saved a shutout with a ninth-inning homer, while he and his mates were held to five hits.

Leake prevails in slugfest

Leake notched his first win in five starts with Wednesday’s 10-7 victory for Cincinnati as a 145 home favorite to the Arizona Cardinals. The San Diego native allowed four runs over six innings, giving up one long ball on six hits.

Reds outfielder Shin-Soo Choo notched three RBIs from the leadoff spot, drilling a homer and double as part of a 4-for-5 night. Cincinnati’s Aroldis Chapman stood in for the matchup’s final two frames, picking up his 32nd save.

Lyons returns to start

Lyons began the month with a pair of outings for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, giving up eight earned runs over a combined 11 1/3 IP. The rookie made seven starts for St. Louis prior to that span, with the final five matchups resulting in four losses and one no-decision.

Lyons faced the Reds once in June, giving up four runs over 5 1/3 frames in a 4-2 defeat as a 140 road dog. Tuesday’s road duel for the Cardinals against Milwaukee saw Lyons in his latest MLB action, allowing one hit in two innings of late relief.

Back the Cardinals at home

Lyons opened as a 108 home favorite on’s MLB odds board, while the ‘total’ moved to 8 ½ after OVER action moved the number from its opener of eight. The weather forecast in St. Louis calls for a clear 91 degrees, with calm winds blowing out to left field.

I am adding Lyons and the Cardinals to Monday’s sports picks, looking for St. Louis to start another winning streak here.

Lyons has had his challenges, but faces a Reds club here hitting just .228 against left-handed pitching on the road. St. Louis should be able to answer back from Sunday’s setback with its share of octane, logging a 5-2 mark in its last seven spots that followed allowing five or more runs in its previous game.

Leake has started loosening up, allowing 16 earned runs over his last four outings (23 IP). The span included surrendering seven runs against the Cardinals earlier this month, with St. Louis prevailing in a 15-2 spanking of Cincinnati.

Cincinnati is 4-9 in its last 13 road matchups against southpaw starters, while St. Louis has hit a stellar .288 against right-handed pitching at home. Look for these trends to hold up here, as we look to add the Cardinals to our MLB picks at a low premium.
