After a nice 2-0 day yesterday, I’ve looked at today’s slate of games and see some money making opportunities when making our MLB Picks of the Day for Thursday.

Boston (2-0) at New York (0-2)

We knew with all of the Yankees injuries that they were going to have a tough time and indeed, they’ve been battered around by their nemesis.

When you’re so many players short and your payroll isn’t what it once was except for having Alex Rodriguez dominate it while he sits on the bench from so many surgeries due to HGH or whatever, you’re not going to win baseball games. However, some players have a way of bringing out the best in teams and Andy Pettitte is one of those people.

Pettitte To the Rescue?

Whenever there’s been a big game over the last decade and a half, the Yankees have called upon Andy Pettitte and he’s responded.

Pettitte will be 41 years old, but off of last year, he still a good major league pitcher. Last season, Pettitte was 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA. Look for Andy to stop the bleeding and position the Yankees offense for a win. He’s a big money pitcher and the Yanks need this game for their moral.

Pettitte is opposed by Ryan Dempster. Dempster was a spectacular 7-3 last season, but he played for the Rangers and the run support was the only reason why his record was so super.

This will be a competitive game; the Yankees just don’t have enough ammunition, but expect Dempster to slip up as he normally does.

New York has to be happy about Vernon Wells’ 3 for 4 game yesterday with a home run and 3 RBI and Kevin Youkilis was a solid 2 for 4 against his old mates.

I’m not in love with the price with the Yankees as a -117 betting favorite. I figured them to be more of an underdog. Regardless, New York picks up their first win of the season today.

Cleveland (2-0) at Toronto (0-2)

This is the same scenario as the Yankees-Red Sox with the same betting odds. The only difference is that a lot was expected of the Blue Jays this season and thus far the offense has been held to just 3 runs in 2 games.

Mark Buehrle takes the mound and from his White Sox days, we know that he’s the definition of a workhorse. He’s a pitcher that will pitch just above the .500 mark and give 200 innings per season. Every team needs a pitcher like that on their squad and with the Blue Jays bats, Buehrle could have an even better season.

No Way, Jose!

This is directed at Jose Reyes. It seems like Reyes should’ve stayed with the Mets because he hasn’t shown the ability to play for any other team.

The season is super-early, but Reyes is  just  1 for 8. I’m not a Reyes guy; I think that he’s a cancer to the clubhouse, but time will tell. In the meanwhile, the Jays have heavy hitters like Jose Bautista to carry them and Bautsista has already went yard this season.

It will also be interesting to see how Melky Cabrera plays. He’s just 2 for 9 in 2 games and can he play without the performance enhancement drugs is the question?

Brett Myers is very hittable and this is the game where the Blue Jays can flap their wings.

Brantley for MVP?

Now this is a joke, but Michael Brantley has got off to a red hot start in the Indians first two wins. He’s 5 for 7 with 2 runs and an RBI. A Buehrle-Brantley matchup will prove to be quite interesting. Just like the Yanks, the Jays need this game desperately.

Yet again, I’m not in love with the odds. The odds makers have Toronto as a bloated -158 favorite and the total is 9. These teams have proven that an UNDER 9 is almost a given, but you never know when they’ll break out offensively. Buehrle should get the job done here. Lay the juice.
