After an outstanding 2 -0 day yesterday headed by the Mets at +170 we look for another big day in the MLB Picks of the Day on this Kentucky Derby Saturday. Let’s get at it!!

There’s a lot of day games on today’s slate and I’ll choose from the night games to give you the maximum amount of print time to ponder the MLB picks.

New York Mets (11-15) at Atlanta Braves (17-11)

We hit yesterday with the Mets as a +170 underdog; why not have at it again? The Mets are riding high. Previous to yesterday’s game, they also came back from a 4-0 deficit to the Miami Marlins to dispose of the fish. Even though the odds makers don’t know it yet, this team is starting to gain some momentum.

Pitching Matchup

The Mets send Jonathan Niese (2-2, 3.31) to the mound and he’ll be opposed by Julio Teheran (1-0, 5.08) of the Braves. If anything the Mets have the advantage where starting pitching is concerned.

Niese is an experienced major league pitcher that does a good job for a sub-.500 baseball team. Niese has had a quality start in all but one of his starts this season and is coming off of solid performance against Philadelphia in which he gave up just 1 earned run in 6 2/3 innings. Niese is also 6-3 with a 2.97 ERA in 12 career starts against the Braves.

Teheran is coming off of 2 consecutive solid performances, but you have to give Niese the edge concerning experience.

Best Offensive Catcher in the Majors

Surprisingly, John Buck has earned that title for the Mets as he’s their best power hitter on the team.

Buck along with Lucas Duda, are coming off of home runs in a 7-5 victory over the Braves yesterday. On the season, Buck has 10 HR, 29 RBI and has 2 HR and 6 RBI in his last 3 games. Buck is on fire and we don’t know how long this run will go for; we just go along for the ride when picking New York.

Speaking of catchers, the Braves have a pretty good one in Evan Gattis. On the season, Gattis has 7 HR’s and is coming off of a home run last night.

A lot of players in this game are starting to gain their confidence offensively, but it’s New York with the momentum and super value.

Arizona Diamondbacks (15-13) at San Diego Padres (11-17)

I immediately go to 5 Dimes Sportsbook and shake my head when looking at the odds. Despite dominating in starting pitching, the D’Backs are just a -110 betting favorite. I’m going to be all over Arizona in this one.

The D’Backs send left-hander, Patrick Corbin (3-0, 1.91) to the mound and he’s opposed by Clayton Richard (0-3, 7.94) for the Pads. Aside from Arizona being the better baseball team, this is a one-sided pitching matchup.

Corbin has been excellent this season with a quality start in every outing this year. If Arizona’s lineup can get possibly a few runs, they’ll be in the driver’s seat due to Corbin being stingy to opposing teams.

Richard on the other hand, is allowing the opposition to hit .319 off of him and has had just one good start thus far. This is an immediate “slam dunk” in favor of Arizona.

San Diego is coming off of a 7-6 victory in the 1st game of this series, but this is all about the pitching. The Diamondbacks have formidable hitting in leadoff hitter Gerardo Parra followed by Paul Goldschmidt and Jason Kubel. This lineup should play well enough to fluster Clayton Richard.
