It’s Saturday and time for another installment of MLB Picks of the Day. In this installment, we’ll be riding the teams who have momentum and also dissecting the pitching matchups.

We took our shot yesterday with 2 underdogs and the the Cleveland Indians couldn’t seal the deal with Detroit. What does this mean? We lose nothing and with the Yankees victory over Kansas City, we’re on the plus side by a sliver.

New York Yankees (21-13) at Kansas City Royals (18-14)

It Doesn’t Matter Who Takes the Field

Sometimes you stick with what’s working for you and Yankees have been very good to me. This is a baseball team that’s surpassed all expectations with all of the injuries that they’ve had to deal with. It’s almost the equivalent to the NBA and the Knicks. The fill-ins are playing so well, that they’re not looking for Amare Stoudemire to return  to the lineup.

In the Yankees case, they now know that they have weapons that were never used. They’ll be more than happy when Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, and company return return to the lineup.

Starting Pitching

One player that’s been able to escape injuries is 40 year old Andy Pettitte. Pettitte starts for the Yanks tonight in a tough matchup against James Shields (2-2, 2.52).

What I like in this matchup is that while Pettitte is a gamer, Shields has had trouble against New York for his career. He’s a career 7-14 against the Bombers with a 4.56 ERA in 26 career starts.Pettitte on the other hand has had a huge amount of success against the Royals with a lifetime 14-3 mark and a 3.44 ERA. Shields has been the much hotter pitcher of late, but when Andy faces KC, he seems to be dialed in

The New York offense hasn’t been overwhelming this season, but last night they were unstoppable in an 11-6 victory over K.C. Aside from and Ichiro home run, it was Lyle Overbay’s time to shine as he went 4 for 5 with a home run and 5 RBI.

The Yankees lineup contain a bunch of new names and most nights a different player steps up.

I like the Yankees with their momentum in this spot as a live dog. Take the Bombers at this appealing price.

Pick: Yankees +128 at 5 Will Hill

Oakland Athletics (18-19) at Seattle Mariners (17-19)

Poor Pitching

We take a look a look at the total in this game and have to love it as 2 subpar pitchers in Jarrod Parker (1-5, 7.34) and Brandon Maurer (2-4, 6.07) take the mound for each respective team. I’ve been a notorious Parker-fader all season and for the most part, it’s been successful, but this time the total looks a bit more appealing at a mere 7.5 runs.

We know that these teams don’t have the offense of a Detroit Tigers but 7.5 runs is awful low considering that Maurer relapsed after a great outing against the Angels and Parker has been “crap” all season long.

In his last start, Jarrod Parker gave up 4 home runs in just 5 innings pitched against Cleveland. He’s had only one quality outing all season.Brandon Maurer is a different story; he started the season getting   rocked and then came back strong, but as I’ve stated, he’s fallen back to his old ways, allowing 4 runs and 6 hits in just 4 innings against Baltimore.

The bottom line is we should see some offense in this game and the betting total is much too low. Take the OVER when making your baseball picks here.
