Today in Philadelphia I am backing the Colorado Rockies with my MLB picks to beat the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are one of the worst teams in baseball this season and have lost five in a row.
This is a very interesting line considering the pitching matchup with the numbers favoring the Phillies. MLB odds makers have come with this game with the Phillies around -115 and the Rockies around +103. So most likely you will have to pay a little juice but going against the Phillies is still the play.
Aaron Harang gets the start for the Phillies and comes in with an ERA just below 2.00 and a WHIP of just above 1.00, really solid numbers for the veteran. But he has not face any of the top hitting teams in the league, actually the best hitting team he faced was the Rockies about ten days ago where he had a solid outing allowing only three hits in six innings. I think with the Rockies getting a second look at him they should have more quality at bats and remind us all about Harang’s career numbers with an ERA over 4.00. Jorge De La Rosa gets the call for the Rockies and he has been a bit shaky this year but is starting to settle down. He has an ERA over 6.00 and a WHIP just above 1.60, not good numbers. But he is better than that and has only allowed three earned runs in his last 11 innings. His most recent start was against the Phillies so they will also be familiar with him, but I like for him to get another good start against them and continue to get his ERA down. He is also a solid strikeout pitcher with 31 K’s in 29 innings this season.
No Comparison at the Plate
In every major offensive category the Rockies are much higher ranked than the Phillies. The best stat to show this disparity in my opinion is the on base plus slugging % where the Rockies rank eighth in the league and the Phillies rank dead last.
Both teams are last in their divisions but statistically the Rockies are the better team. For my MLB picks, I'm taking them today to continue the Phillies downswing.
