Athletics vs. Yankees Game 3

Thursday's Line
Many books opened New York and Masahiro Tanaka at around -160 over Oakland and Drew Pomeranz, with a total of 7.5 runs, then bumped the Yanks to around -170. That means that Tanaka was definitely attracting some early betting action.

 Wednesday Re-Hash
When Jacoby Ellsbury yanked a three-run homer to right-center in the bottom of the third to give New York a 4-0 lead Oakland looked cooked, but the A's (with the Majors best offense at the moment) and a very good bullpen, scored once in the fourth, once in the fifth, twice in the sixth, once in the seventh and twice in the top of the ninth, while the bullpen threw three innings of scoreless relief, as Oakland rallied for the 7-4 victory. The A's won as a -135 favorite on Wednesday's MLB betting line, and covered against the run line at a price of  +115 - thank you very much.

 Thursday's Starters
Tanaka (8-1, 2.06), by our tough standards, is 10-for-11 on quality starts so far in his first season in the MLB. Most recently he held Minnesota to one unearned run through eight innings, and just before that he limited the White Sox to one run through 6 2/3 innings. For the season, he has allowed just 63 hits in 78 2/3 innings, walked just 12, and whiffed 88. New York is 9-2 in Tanaka's starts, with the totals going 6-5.

This will be Tanaka's first start against Oakland.

Lefty Pomeranz (5-2, 2.37) is 0-for-five on quality starts, in part because he hasn't yet pitched six innings in any one outing. Last time out, he gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Angels, but in his four starts previous to that he had allowed just two runs through 19 innings. For the season, including nine appearances in relief, Pomeranz has allowed 28 hits in 38 innings, walked 17, and struck out 35. Oakland is 4-1 in Pomeranz' starts, with the totals leaning 'under'  3-2.

Pomeranz has never started against the Yankees.

 Injury Update
New York OF Carlos Beltran is expected to come off the DL Thursday and could be in the lineup.

Free MLB Pick for Thursday: Tanaka has been masterful so far this season, so it's hard to go against him, but with the A's rolling like they are, and getting an underdog price, we have no choice but to take Oakland, getting +158 at 5Dimes, for our free MLB pick on Thursday's game.

Athletics vs. Yankees Game 2

Wednesday's Line
Most books we consulted opened Oakland and Jesse Chavez at around -130 over New York and Vidal Nuno, with a total of nine runs. Many shops then bumped the A's to the -140 range.

Oakland could also be found at around +115 giving the 1.5 runs on Wednesday's MLB betting run line.

Tuesday Re-Hash
Oakland tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the top of the eighth Tuesday night, then took the lead for good on Brandon Moss' second homer of the game, a solo shot, in the top of the tenth. The A's then tacked on a couple more runs for the 5-2 victory.

Oakland won as a -120 favorite on Tuesday's MLB betting line, and to our great gladness covered on the run line at a price of +135.

The A's have won four games in a row, scoring 31 runs in the process. They're also 19-10 on the road this year.

New York has scored a total of 10 runs over its last five games.

Wednesday's Starters
Nuno (1-2, 5.48), a lefty, is three-for-eight on quality starts this season. Last time out he gave up four runs and three home runs in 6 2/3 innings against Minnesota, although in his two starts previous to that he had held the Pirates and White Sox to five ER through 13 innings.

For the season Nuno has allowed 52 hits in 47 2/3 innings, walked 17 and struck out 37. New York is 4-4 in Nuno's starts, with the totals tilting toward the UNDERS by a 5-3 margin.

This will be Nuno's first-ever start against the A's.

Chavez (4-3, 2.78), a seven-year vet who before this season had started just two ML games, is six-for-11 on quality starts this season. Last time out he gave up three runs in six innings against Detroit, and over his last four starts he's given up nine ER in 24 1/3 innings.

On the season Chavez has allowed fewer hits, 62, than innings pitched, 68, and posted a solid 64/18 K/BB ratio. Oakland is 8-3 in Chavez' starts, with the totals leaning toward the OVERS 7-4.

This will be Chavez' first-ever start against the Yankees.

Injury Update
Oakland's Brandon Moss and New York's Mark Teixeira, who were both questionable for Tuesday's game, both played, and both went yard, Moss twice. Meanwhile, the A's removed any questions about Josh Reddick by placing him on the DL.

Free Pick for Wednesday
We got lucky with Oakland on the run line Tuesday night, but that's OK, we deserved it. And in thinking “deja vu” we'll go with the A's on the run line again, at the +115 offered at Ladbrokes, for today's free MLB pick.

A's-Yanks Betting Lines
Oakland and Scott Kazmir opened as -115 favorites for Tuesday's series opener over New York and Hiroki Kuroda, with a total of eight runs, but many books bumped the A's a dime or so, to around -125, in the early betting action. Oakland could also be gotten at around +140 giving the run, and a half on the run line. Interestingly enough, the Greek was listing the Yankees as -125 favorites to win this series, with the A's getting +105.

Series Set-Up
New York just dropped two of three games at home to Minnesota over the weekend, then lost a make-up game Monday to Felix Hernandez and Seattle 10-2. At 29-27, the Yankees are in second place in the AL East, four games behind first-place Toronto.

Oakland just swept three games from the Angels over the weekend to complete a 5-2 home-stand, so at 35-22 the A's lead the AL West by 4.5 games over the second-place Angels. This is the first meeting between these teams this season. Last year the A's took five of six games from the Yanks, with the totals leaning toward the 'unders' by a 4-2 margin.

Tuesday's Starters
Kuroda (4-3, 4.57), by our tough standards, is just three-for-11 on quality starts this year. Last time out, against St. Louis, Kuroda allowed three runs and nine hits in less than six innings, and over his last four starts he's given up 12 ER and 22 hits in 16 1/3 innings. For the season, Kuroda has allowed more hits (75) than innings pitched (65), walked 11 and struck out 49. New York is 5-6 in Kuroda's starts, with the totals going 6-5.

Kuroda started once against the A's last year, holding them to two runs and two hits through eight innings, although the Yankees lost that game 3-2.

Lefty Kazmir (6-2, 2.36) continues his comeback career arc. He's seven-for-11 in quality starts this season, and coming off a wonderful outing in which he held the Tigers to one run through nine innings, walking none while whiffing eight, earning a victory when Josh Donaldson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. So far this season, Kazmir has allowed just 53 hits in 68 2/3 innings, while compiling a nifty 53/13 K/BB ratio. Oakland is 9-2 in Kazmir's starts, with the totals going 5-6.

Kazmir, pitching for Cleveland, started once last year against the Yankees, allowing four runs in six innings of a 4-3 Indians loss. In the battle of the bullpens for this series the A's rank fifth with a 2.78 ERA, although they have blown nine of 19 save opportunities, while the Yankees rank 23rd in ERA at 4.13 while going 18-for-26 on save chances.

With the Sticks
Oakland leads the Majors in both scoring at 5.2 runs per game, and team OBP at .340, and ranks third in homers with 66. Also, the A's have tallied 48 runs over their last seven games; six of those games played 'over' the totals. New York ranks in 14th in OBP at .319, while averaging 4.1 RPG, but the Yanks are in a mini-slump, scoring just eight runs over their last four games.

A's-Yanks Betting Trends
Oakland is 18-10 on the road this season.

New York is just 12-14 at home.

Games played at Yankee Stadium this season have trended toward the 'unders' by a 15-11 margin.

Injury Update
New York 1B Mark Teixeira has missed recent action with soreness in that wrist, and OF Carlos Beltran is still on the DL with that bad elbow. On the other side of the lineup card, Oakland 1B Brandon Moss (13 HR) and OF Josh Reddick have both missed recent action, and are both questionable for Tuesday.

Free MLB Pick for Tuesday: The A's own edges in the pitching match-up, with the bats and in the bullpen, so we're definitely leaning their way. Also, since we like to take chances, we'll go with Oakland on the run line, getting +140 at 5Dimes, for our free baseball pick on Tuesday's game.
