MLB Picks: Astros vs. Red Sox
Swinging Johnson – MLB Record (1-1, +1.00 units)
*Games assigned 1 to 5 units.
Last week was my first foray into the MLB this season and we came within a hair of making it a sweep. The Under 7 in the Atlanta/Pittsburgh game clicked for 3 units but then we had a near miss with a big money favorite in the Cincinnati Reds (-230) flaming out as the first leg of our two-unit, two-team parlay with Under 7 ½ in that game. Final score, the Marlins (the freakin' Marlins of all teams!) 2-1 over the Reds. Plus one unit for the evening.
Friday April 26th, 2013 - Astros (7-15) vs. Red Sox (15-7)
The Sox got the job done Thursday night as Clay Buchholz notched another W on his holster and Boston delivered a 7-2 victory to the Fenway faithful. But unfortunately you can't bet that game so we must look towards tonight's matchup featuring Erik Bedard of the Astros versus Ryan Dempster of the Red Sox.
Erik Bedard has not gone more than four innings in any start this season. He won't find the going any easier at Fenway Park where the Red Sox have been heating up lately. Bedard is actually 5-4 in his lifetime starts against Boston but it should be noted he has not started a game against them since 2008.
Ryan Dempster has been a hard luck loser this season for the Sox. He is 0-2 with two no decisions but he has been mowing the opposition down with regularity. He has rung up 33 batters in just 24 innings pitched and has a respectable ERA of 3.38 with a 1.13 WHIP.
The Astros love to swing at virtually anything close to the batter's box. They lead the MLB in strikeouts with 9.91/game and that is tailor made for a strikeout artist like Dempster. The problem is that we are going to have to lay some serious lumber if we want to back the hometown team. Couple that with the fact that Dempster got knocked around a bit in his last outing against KC when he allowed four runs on six hits.
So what do we do? Well, I am not going to back an Astros team with a propensity for striking out particularly when they're facing a guy who has had no problem making batters swing and miss this season. I'm gonna lay dat lumba and play the Red Sox in your major league betting odds.

Saturday 4/27 Astros/Red Sox Preview
Felix Doubront will get the nod for the Sox on Saturday night as he hooks it up with Brad Peacock of the 'Stros. Doubront, like Dempster, has been painting the corners and making the batters whiff. He has surrendered only three runs or less in all three of his starts this season while Brad Peacock has gotten shelled, not lasting more than five innings in any of his starts this season.
The faces may change but the story remains the same for the Astros. They are a team with a dearth of pitching coupled with free swinging batters who are not able to overcome the ineptitude of their hurlers. This one looks like it may be a repeat of Thursday night and Friday night as the Sox look to feast on some home cooking this weekend at the expense of the Houston Astros.Take the Red Sox at Bookmaker
