MLB Picks: Astros' Struggles With Lefties To Continue vs. Underdog Tigers

Detroit Tigers

Could there be some value in backing the Tigers on the money line? The Astros have a veteran pitcher on the mound, but Detroit have some betting value. Read on for our free MLB Pick.

Currently, MLB odds have the Detroit Tigers at a +107 underdog. For my MLB pick, I like the Tigers in this spot considering they are throwing a left-hander today and remain among the best hitting teams in all of baseball. Pretty good value here on taking the home team.

Houston Astros
Collin McHugh takes the mound for Houston and comes in with a 4.18 ERA and 1.43 whip while allowing just nine earned runs in his last five games. He has been pitching well recently and his hit totals have been really low, however, in that span, he has only faced one really good hitting team and that was Seattle. Hats off to him though as he was stellar allowing zero earned runs off of just four hits in six innings against the Mariners. It makes sense that he is the favorite today but in his overall body of work in his last 10 games he has only faced three of the top hitting teams in baseball, still for the most part he has been solid. At the plate, Houston has really struggled this year in proportion to last season but what really has my radar up is their numbers against left-handers. Overall they are hitting .246 as a team with a .747 OPS but against left-handers those numbers drop to .235, last in the American League, and .726 which ranks them 12th.

Detroit Tigers
Matt Boyd gets the start for Detroit and takes the mound with a 4.63 ERA and 1.30 whip overall but a 2.01 ERA at home. After getting hammered to straight starts against the White Sox and the Royals away from home Boyd has come back in his last three starts to allow two earned runs in 15 innings. As well, in his four home starts this season he has been very good with only one real tough outing allowing four earned runs off of six hits against the Yankees. In his other three home starts, he allowed just one earned run total in 16 innings. With his home numbers along with Houston's statistical troubles against left-handers this a good spot to back him with some plus money. At the plate, Detroit has been one of the best hitting teams all season hitting .266 as a team which ranks them sixth in all baseball. They also rank fifth in hits per game, seventh in total bases, and eighth in OPS. Don't expect McHugh to get out of this game without giving up a few to this really good Tigers offense.
