Our MLB consultant examines Tuesday’s game between the Rays and Angels & delivers his MLB pick. Can the Angels win their sixth game in a row tonight? Will red-hot Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer put a halt to the Halos win streak?
Rays attempt to even Series with Angels on Tuesday
The Angels and Rays will meet on Tuesday at 10:05 PM ET for the second of their three game series in Anaheim. According to the MLB betting odds at BetOnline Tampa Bay is a -113 money line favorite, and the posted total is 7.0. The Angels took the series opener on Monday in a 7-3 lopsided victory. The win was the fifth in a row by the Halos, and Tampa Bay has gone 2-7 in their last nine games. These teams have gone 10-5 over the total in their head to head battles since 2013, and the Angels were 10-5 in those fifteen games.
The Rays will go with right-hander Chris Archer on the mound tonight. Archer has been terrific thus far in 2015, posting a superb 2.12 ERA, and compiling a better than 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio during his eleven starts. He’s displayed excellent form over his previous three starts, posting a microscopic 0.93 ERA, and amassing a nearly 5:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Archer was 2-0 in his team starts last season versus the Angels with a shining 2.31 ERA.
The Angels veteran southpaw C.J. Wilson will make the start on Monday. In ten starts this season, he’s posted a respectable 3.24 ERA. However, Wilson is in bad form during his last three starts, posting a lofty 4.76 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, and he walked 10 in 17.0 innings pitched.
One of my fundamental MLB handicapping theories is to simply side with a starting pitcher in good form during his last three starts, over a hurler displaying the opposite in his previous three. That will be the case in this game tonight with the Rays Archer pitching brilliantly in recent starts, opposed to C.J. Wilson who’s displayed poor form during his last three outings. Since the beginning of the 2013 season, the Angels have found it difficult when placed into this exact situation, going 11-27 when there’s a total of 7.0 or less. I’m leaning toward the road team for one of my MLB picks on Tuesday.
