AL West Battle at Minute Maid
The Astros will host the Angels on Tuesday at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas with the first pitch scheduled for 8:10 PM ET. According to MLB betting odds the Angels are a -135 money line road favorite and the posted total is 8.0. The Angels are 7-2 in their last 9 overall versus the Astros, including 5-1 the last 6 at Houston.
The Astros send 25-year old Collin McHugh to the mound this evening. Although his win and loss record doesn't show it, the Angels hurler is having a fine start to the year. In 7 starts he's posted an impressive 2.80 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, and a better than 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio. McHugh has made one career start versus the Angels, and that came less than 2 weeks ago on the road. He allowed just 2 earned runs in 7.0 innings of work during a 2-1 Astros loss.
The Angels veteran southpaw C.J. Wilson will be on the hill tonight. Wilson has posted a very good 3.05 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 11 starts this season. Wilson has been in exceptionally good form over his last 3 starts posting an excellent 1.57 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in those outings. Since the start of the 2013 season Wilson has started 5 times versus the Astros, and had a terrific 1.82 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP during those outings.
Angels Humbled at Oakland
The Angels were feeling pretty good about themselves heading into their 3-game series at Oakland this past weekend. After all, they had just trimmed the A's lead in the AL West to 1.5 games. However, what transpired for the Halos was humbling to say the least. They were swept by the A's, and were outscored in the process by a combined score of 26-11. It's back to the drawing board, and time to regroup. They still remain 2nd in the division, 4.5 games behind Oakland, and there's still a lot of baseball to play in 2014.
Astros are Showing Signs of
Granted the Astros have lost their last 2 heading into tonight, but that was preceded by a 7-game winning streak. One of the positives for this young Astros team has been the marked improvement of their young starting pitching rotation. Additionally, after putting up anemic offensive numbers in their first 50-games of this season, their bats have shown signs of life of late. The reality still remains that the Astros are currently 24-34, and are last in the AL West, trailing first place Oakland by 11.5 games.
