The Yankees are once again small home favorites on the MLB odds as they continue their 3-game set at home against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.

Are the New York Yankees about to pull away in the AL East? They widened the gap a little on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in the opener of a 3-game set, and will be looking to do the same again Wednesday when the baseball betting board lists New York as small home chalk once again.

Ivan Nova gets the call for Joe Girardi's club in Game 2, the lanky delivering the game's initial toss at 7:05 PM (ET) with ESPN's cameras looking on. The moneyline hasn't moved much from the opener with the Yankees currently priced -115 at BetOnline.  Kevin Gausman opposes Nova with an 8½ run total priced evenly high and low.

Nova Facing 3rd-Straight AL East Foe
This could be Gausman's last chance to show he deserves to be in Baltimore's starting rotation. After beginning the season in Manager Buck Showalter's bullpen, Gausman was sent down to stretch out as a starter for six weeks before being recalled in June. It has been a mixed bag since then, his last appearance on July 7 going in the ugly column at Minnesota (3.2 IP, 7 ER).

Gausman saw the Yankees in a relief role back in April, but faced them three times as a starter a year ago. The former 1st-round pick (2012) out of LSU helped the O's to a pair of wins at Camden Yards (12 IP, 1 ER combined), earning a no-decision in a Baltimore loss at Yankee Stadium (5 IP, 2 ER).

New York has dropped Nova's last three assignments, the righthander charged with nine earned runs in the 17 total frames. This is just his fifth start since recovering from Tommy John surgery, and first against the Orioles since getting bombed in Baltimore last April. The Yankees split his four starts vs. the Birds in 2013, Nova going to distance in the two wins.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
Calling balls and strikes in Game 2 should be Tim Welke, now in his 33rd year at the major league level. It's his first plate assignment since before the all-star break, and totals are running 7-8-1 (O/U/P) this year after a 13-18 O/U mark in 2014. Home teams are 9-7 overall when the elder of the Welke Brothers is behind the dish, favorites up to -120 on the MLB odds winning four times out of five.

A passing thunderstorm interrupted Tuesday's series opener, stopping the game in the top of the second for about 15 minutes.  he weatherman says there's no chance of that happening on Wednesday when the forecast calls for temps in the low-80s and first pitch, clear skies and an 8-10 mph blow out of the NW (out to right). I'm playing the Yankees once again for my free MLB pick.
