Kansas City Royals (Ventura) at Chicago White Sox (Sale) (-150) 8:10 ET
Kansas City visits CWS for the start of an extended 4-game weekend set. White Sox are MLB odds favorite on this game as these 2 teams met for the first 3 games of the season in Kansas City. The Royals won that set 3 games to none, outscoring the White Sox (21-7). That extends the recent series record for the Royals to 21-7 vs. CWS.
That 3-game sweep kicked started Kansas City’s season, which now finds the Royals to be 11-4 for the year, tied with Detroit for the best record in the American League. The Kansas City ascent has been well documented. The Royals have gone from 72, to 86, to 89 victories in the previous 3 seasons. That culminated with a World Series appearance last year. The success formula for the Royals has been outstanding defense, a solid bullpen and this season, the addition of some power hitting. Kansas City has also proven to be an outstanding road team. Dating to last year, they are now 30-13 on the road, including 4-2 this season. Today’s starting pitcher, Ventura, is a fire-balling right hander. Ventura had an outstanding year in 2014, working 183 IP, with a 3.20 ERA, while posting 159 Ks. His first 2 outings of the year were solid victories vs. these White Sox (10-1) in which he worked 6 IP, allowing 1 run on 4 hits. He followed that up with an equally solid win at LAA. In his previous outing against Oakland on April 18th, he became caught up in the emotion of the series, was ripped by Oakland for 5 runs in 3 1/3 IP and was eventually ejected for hitting Lawrie after being lit up for a 3-run homer. He is fighting that suspension and will face the White Sox tonight.
The White Sox are again going nowhere! This team has a combined 142 victories the previous 2 years with negative marks on their home field. Tonight’s starter, Chris Sale, is the clear ace of the staff. Sale made a late start to the season due to injury. But in his 2 starts to date, his numbers have been a reminiscent of his 2014 season when he worked 174 IP with a 2.17 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, .205 BAA and 208/39 KBB. Though he has posted a career ERA of 2.68 against the Royals, he has a record of just 7-8.
This is a bloated line based solely on the anticipated performance of CWS starting pitcher, Sale. Though we must respect his work in recent seasons, there is much more to the baseball handicap than the starting pitcher. Besides, there is no reason the peripatetic, Ventura, cannot match the performance of his mound opponent. With the Royals having dominant edges across the board in every category but starting pitching, we will take this series dominator as our MLB pick with proven road ability at a value underdog price!
