Each day the LT Profits Sports Group seeks out a total that simply does not add up and therefore offers the most value that day. Here is their Total Value Play of the Day for Thursday.

A team that seems to have quit on this season but has a good pitcher on the mound could give value to the ‘under’ Thursday when C.J. Wilson and those Los Angeles Angels (53-66, 23-34 away) pay a visit to Phil Hughes and the New York Yankees (62-57, 34-26 home) in the final game of a four-game series from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY at 1:05 ET in a game televised regionally on MLB Network.

The posted total at Pinnacle Spots is 8½ for this contest with the current odds on the ‘under’ set at -105.

The Yankees are going for a four-game sweep today after winning a pitching duel 2-1 in the series opener and then exploding offensively to win the last two nights to win 14-7 and 11-3 respectively. The Yankees are doing their best to stay in the playoff hunt as they now trail the first place Boston Red Sox by 8½ games in the American League East and the Oakland Athletics by five games for the final wild card spot.

Meanwhile this has been a lost season for the Angels and the days of long-time manager Mike Scioscia could be numbered as his team seems to have quit and is showing absolutely no enthusiasm. Los Angeles was expected to compete for the division title this year with one of the largest bankrolls in baseball, but instead the Halos are in fourth place in the American League West at 13 games under .500 and 16 games behind the first place Texas Rangers.

Things have gotten so bad for the Angels that they have even fallen two games behind the Seattle Mariners, who have a fraction of their payroll.

With all that said, Thursday starter C.J. Wilson is having a fine year as he has managed to go 12-6 for a sad-sack team with a nice 3.49 ERA and 143 strikeouts vs. 59 walks and just 10 home runs allowed in 152.1 innings. Wilson is 8-1 over his last 11 starts and he has allowed three earned runs or less in seven of his last eight outings with the only clunker coming vs. the Texas Rangers in Arlington on July 29th.

Wilson has allowed two runs or less in each of his last four starts against the Yankees with the most recent coming June 14th in Anaheim where he allowed two runs on just five hits in seven innings. The southpaw is also facing a Yankee team that has not fared well vs. left-handed pitchers this season, batting .237 while averaging only 3.59 runs per nine innings against them overall.

The Yankees counter with Hughes, who has admittedly been bad over his last three starts while going 0-2 with an 11.45 ERA and 2.45 WHIP and lasting a total of only 11 innings. However, Hughes still has a good ratio on the season of 100 strikeouts vs. 34 walks, and it helps that he is facing an Angels’ team that has given up while batting just .233 and averaging 3.41 runs per game vs. right-handed pitchers over the last 10 games.

Therefore do not expect a boatload of runs for either side in an ‘under’ on Thursday.

MLB Pick: Angels, Yankees ‘under’ 8½ (-105)
