Regardless of where the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies sit in the standings, their matchups are always entertaining. It just so happens that Monday’s first of three in Philadelphia finds the clubs a half-game apart at the top of the NL East to add to the excitement.

Tight money lines at the sportsbooks certainly believe it will be a hotly-contested matchup, the Phillies listed around -115 at most outlets. The initial mound duel will be between a couple of young studs who have struggled a bit in the first two weeks, Noah Syndergaard (1-1, 4.74) and Aaron Nola (1-0, 6.46), and they’ll be in the ESPN spotlight with 7½ for the total.

Can Thor Tame Hoskins?

New York just lost the division lead to Philadelphia by dropping its final two games in Atlanta over the weekend. This series is the middle set of a long road trip that concludes with a trek to St. Louis later this week, and the Mets will look to continue their strong start on offense where Jeff McNeil brings a 5-game hit streak into Monday’s matchup. The Phils are returning home following a short trip to Miami, and needed 14 innings to win the rubber game of the series with the Marlins on Sunday. The lineup has been doing its part scoring better than 5½ per game, but the pitchers have had troubles recently by allowing 10+ runs in three of the last five contests.

Syndergaard and Nola squared off twice last year, each earning a no-decision in the April matchup and Nola coming out on top in the August clash. Syndergaard is 2-2 in five career starts at Citizens Bank Park, pitching to a 3.80 ERA in those outings, and has struggled against Rhys Hoskins over the years (4-9, 2 HR). Nola is making his 10th career start vs. the Mets, and is 6-1 against them with a 3.35 ERA. The LSU alum has limited Michael Conforto to just three hits in 21 at bats, one of those knocks leaving the year.

Wind Could Be A Factor Monday Evening

This rivalry has belonged to the Mets in recent years as New York has claimed the last seven season series. The Mets have also enjoyed playing at Citizens Bank Park since it opened in 2004, taking 79 of the 140 games played there. The clubs split the 10 on this diamond a year ago, the ‘under’ cashing in six of those contests.

Tonight’s City of Brotherly Love forecast includes cool temps in the low-50s that are going to feel downright cold with a 20-25 mph WNW wind, some gusts exceeding 30 mph. I’m going to ride with the Mets with my free MLB pick.
