Several factors play into how to bet totals in baseball games, and every bettor weighs them differently. Weather is one influence in my decision, and that’s as good a place to start as any when looking at Game 2 of the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox.

Following a wet day in Boston on Tuesday, the meteorologist is calling for skies to begin clearing in the area Wednesday afternoon. Some 36 hours in advance of the first pitch, the forecast is for a game-time temp around 46 degrees along with a 14-15 mph blow out of the northwest, pushing balls from the Green Monster in left toward Pesky’s Pole in right. Just how that forecast sways decisions by sportsbooks in setting their scoreboard target for the game remains to be seen, but after going with a 7½-run mark that favors the "under" in Game 1, I’m thinking it will be 8 for Game 2.

Clubs Trending Opposite Directions In Totals Column This October

The pitching matchup between LA’s Hyun-jin Ryu (8-4, 2.32) and Boston’s David Price (17-8, 3.67) is obviously a big factor in the eventual total. It’s the second consecutive double-lefty clash of starting pitchers, and both Ryu (8-10 O/U) and Price (14-17-2 O/U/P) enter the contest with slight "under" leans on the season. Each pitcher has also posted 1-2 O/U marks in their three postseason starts.

While the two hurlers trend to the "under," their teams have been going in opposite directions on baseball odds boards during the playoffs. Six of Boston’s nine October games have jumped the totals, which ranged from 7½-9. The Red Sox scored 56 runs in beating New York and Houston to get to this point, batting .253 and clubbing 9 HR along the way. The Dodgers’ 11 playoff contests have resulted in a 3-6-2 O/U/P record with their games ranging from 7-8½ to get past Atlanta and Milwaukee. Los Angeles plated 43 runs in those games, position players hitting .218 with 13 HR.

Danley Behind Plate For 2nd Career World Series Game

Working the plate for Ted Barrett’s crew in Game 2 will be 27-year veteran umpire Kerwin Danley. A native of Los Angeles, Danley finished the regular season 19-9-1 O/U/P before calling Game 2 of the NLDS between the Rockies and Brewers which finished "under" in Milwaukee. Both contests he worked this year involving the Red Sox went "over" while his three Dodger encounters finished 2-0-1 O/U/P.

Both managers should have all of their relievers available for this one, and we know they won’t be afraid to start bringing them in early. In fact, I’m counting on Dave Roberts and Alex Cora to have to bring them in early with both lineups putting up crooked numbers in the first few innings. Give me the "over" for my free MLB pick.
