Our resident handicapping has been torching the books with his MLB picks over the past couple weeks. He’ll be providing us with a betting preview article on Saturday’s game between the Cardinals and Dodgers.
Cards and Dodgers on Saturday Night at Los Angeles
The Dodgers and Cardinals will meet tonight in Los Angeles at 10:10 PM ET. According to the MLB betting odds at 5Dimes, the Dodgers are a -200 money line favorite, and the posted total is 6.0. St. Louis has won 4 of 5 versus the Dodgers in 2015, and 4 of the 5 have also gone under the total.
The Cardinals Jaime Garcia will make just his fourth start of the season on Saturday. Garcia began 2015 on the disabled list before making his first start on 5/21. He’s posted a stellar 2.70 ERA and 1.05 WHIP thus far.
The Dodgers will turn to their ace Clayton Kershaw tonight. Kershaw has gone 6-5 in his team starts this season while posting a 3.70 ERA. Most starting pitchers would be elated with an ERA like Kershaw currently possesses, but it’s considered disappointing by his standards. On a positive note, Kershaw has been sharp in his last two starts, going 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA, and struck out 17 while walking just 1. The Dodgers southpaw hurler has made three starts versus St. Louis since 7/20/2014 and was unimpressive, evidenced by posting a lofty 6.41 ERA in those outings.
Sizzling Hot Red Birds
The Cardinals enter today having won their last four, and are 10-2 in the last twelve games. The St. Louis pitching staff has been terrific during their last eight games, allowing one run or less in six of those outings, and held opponents to a paltry 1.6 runs per contest during that time. The Cardinals bullpen has been outstanding in 2015, posting a cumulative 2.14 ERA. St. Louis won last night 2-1 as a +115 money line underdog. They’ve now gone a spectacular 13-2 this season as a money line underdog of +100 or more. They’ll be facing starting pitcher (Kershaw) tonight that has a 1.13 WHIP on the season. The Cardinals are an outstanding 9-1 this season when facing a starting pitcher with a WHIP of 1.15 or less.
After getting off to an extremely fast start to 2015, the Dodgers have hit the wall a bit over the past few weeks. They’ve dropped three in a row heading into tonight, and are 9-14 in their last 23 games. On a positive note, despite losing the first two games of the series versus St. Louis, the Dodgers are an outstanding 21-9 (.700) at home in 2015.
Granted that Kershaw is coming off two consecutive strong starts, but he’s been more beatable this season, than any other time in his career. The Dodgers have also gone 3-5 versus southpaw starting pitchers like they’ll face this evening, averaged just 3.0 runs per game, and hit a terrible .214 as a team.
I’m favoring the huge money line underdog tonight with much of that decision based on pure betting value. Before I made my MLB picks, I shopped many major sports books, and decided to go with 5-Dimes who possessed the best money line price.
