We browse the early MLB odds board in search of betting value on Thursday's card. Read on for two selections that will maximize your profits.

Amir Garrett will take the hill for the Reds in their series finale with the Cubs. Garrett is 3-2 with a 4.25 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP after giving up two earned runs on five hits in six innings of a 14-2 win over the Giants on May 6. The rookie left-hander is 2-1 with an awful 6.19 ERA in three road starts though, so facing the Cubs at Wrigley Field will be a tough test, even with the defending World Series champions struggling.

Jon Lester will start for the Cubs after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in just 5 2/3 innings of a 5-3 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. It took Lester 112 pitches to get through 5 2/3 innings but he has been dominant at Wrigley Field this season, going 1-0 with a 1.44 ERA in four starts. I have to go with Lester and the Cubs as one of my MLB picks.

Marlins vs. Dodgers

Edinson Volquez will make his eight start for the Marlins and he's still looking for his first win of the season. Volquez has actually pitched well over his last three starts, giving up three earned runs or less but he has lacked run support. The right-hander allowed just two earned runs on four hits in a 3-1 home loss against the Braves last Saturday but he's 0-3 with a 4.58 ERA in four road starts this season.

The Dodgers will go with Hyun-Jin Ryu, who gave up 10 runs (five earned) on eight hits in just four innings of a 10-7 loss against the Rockies at Coors Field last Thursday. Ryu is now just 1-5 with a 4.99 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP in six starts and he's 1-1 with a 3.97 ERA in two home starts. I'm looking at Under 8 at -105 MLB odds here. This is a high total because Volquez and Ryu have poor records but Volquez has pitched better lately and the Marlins are not scoring many runs these days.
