Chicago Cubs At New York Mets (+118, 8.5)

It’s Game 2 of a three-game series between these disappointing teams.

Will the Mets have arguably their best offensive player in outfielder Michael Conforto? That remains to be seen after he was scratched from Monday’s starting lineup with a stiff back. It’s not expected to be a serious thing. He’s having a terrific season, batting .293 with 14 homers, 36 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .412.

I’m sure Cubs pitcher Jon Lester would be OK with Conforto sitting out again Tuesday. Lester (3-4, 4.13) hasn’t resembled his 2016 self when he was the NL Cy Young runner-up much in 2017. He took the loss last time out at Wrigley vs. Colorado, giving up four runs and six hits over five innings. Lester has been the victim of a little bit worse luck this year as he had a .262 BABIP in 2016, but that figure has risen to .325 in 2017. Some of that is also a weaker Chicago defense. Lester has been a disaster on the road with an 0-3 record and 7.11 ERA in five starts.

Wilmer Flores hits him well, going 5-for-10 with three homers. Curtis Granderson is a .300 hitter vs. Lester with three homers but 15 strikeouts in 50 at-bats. Yoenis Cespedes is only 3-for-18 with nine strikeouts.

New York’s Zack Wheeler (3-3, 3.45) has been a pleasant surprise after missing the past two seasons due to Tommy John surgery. He tied a season high by going seven innings last Wednesday at Texas, giving up one run and six hits in a no-decision. Wheeler hasn’t allowed more than four earned runs in a start since April 23.

Wheeler has been hurt for so long that only a few Cubs have faced him in a regular-season game. Jason Heyward has the most, going 7-for-19 with two homers. Miguel Montero is 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Anthony Rizzo is 0-for-5.

The Cubs are just 1-5 in Lester’s past six on the road, so the Mets are good underdog value here.

Arizona Diamondbacks At Detroit Tigers (+105, 9)

Interleague series opener at 7:10 p.m. ET with Arizona adding the DH.

The Snakes enter having won five of six but those were all at Chase Field. They have the best home record in baseball at 26-9 but are just 13-17 on the road. Arizona is 11-6 in games decided by one run, the second-best mark in the NL and fourth in the majors.

Ace Zack Greinke takes the mound. He was activated from the paternity list Sunday without him missing a start. He and his wife Emily welcomed to the couple’s second child, a boy, on Friday. Greinke (8-3, 3.20) has really bounced back from a mediocre first season with Arizona. He leads the NL wins and is fourth in strikeouts (100) and WHIP (1.02). The Diamondbacks have only lost once in his past seven starts.

In 28 career games (25 starts) vs. the Tigers, Greinke is 13-7 with a 2.79 ERA. He has a 2.78 ERA in 82.2 career innings at Comerica Park. Justin Upton is a .370 hitter off Greinke with two homers in 27 at-bats. Upton is batting .410 with four home runs and 17 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak.

Detroit enters having lost three of four but did avoid a sweep in Boston on Sunday night with an 8-3 victory. Upton had a grand slam. The Tigers start right-hander Buck Farmer (2-0, 0.00 ERA). He was called up in late May and has made two starts without allowing a run and only six hits over 13 innings. Farmer had been 0-6 with a 6.84 ERA career before 2017. He is now is the first pitcher in major-league history to win his first two starts of a season without allowing a run in either after entering that year with a career record of 0–5 or worse. Farmer has never faced Arizona.

Since 2006, the Tigers are 128-80 (.615) in Interleague games. That winning percentage is second-best in that stretch, trailing only the Boston Red Sox (142-75, .654). Farmer won’t keep this up much longer, but let’s ride him as a dog while he’s rolling.
