Rays At Cubs (-141)

It’s a 2:20 p.m. ET first pitch from Wrigley Field on the July 4 holiday. Nice pitching matchup too. It’s former top Cubs prospect Chris Archer for the Rays, who will lose the designated hitter in this interleague series. In 2011, then-Cubs GM Jim Hendry sent a package of prospects headed by Archer to Tampa Bay for starting pitcher Matt Garza. He was solid enough for the Cubs from 2011-13, traded during that ’13 season to the Texas Rangers but the Rays clearly won that deal with Chicago.

The Cubs are known to covet getting Archer (6-5, 3.92) back, but it would cost plenty in young players as Archer is second in the AL in strikeouts (131) and third in innings pitched. He’s also on a team-friendly contract through 2021. He will make only $8.25 million each of those final two seasons, which is incredibly low. The Rays are still in the AL East and wild-card race so they might just hold on to Archer until next offseason. They do need young hitting in their system and the Cubs have plenty of that.

Archer has faced the Cubs once in his career, back in 2014. The only current Cubs to have seen him are Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo and both are 1-for-3 off Archer. He’s 3-3 with 4.21 ERA on the road this year.

The Cubs flip-flopped their rotation to get ace lefty Jon Lester (5-4, 3.69) a start Tuesday so he could then pitch Sunday in the final game before the All-Star break. He’s working on a string of four straight quality starts (2.42 ERA) – all Cubs wins. Lester has a 2.68 ERA in nine home starts in 2017. Plenty of Rays have faced him from his Red Sox days. Evan Longoria is 13-for-56 off him with three homers, eight RBIs and 20 strikeouts.

 Diamondbacks at Dodgers (Total 7)

Latest game on the schedule Tuesday with a 9:10 p.m. ET first pitch. Rather amazingly, Dodgers ace lefty Clayton Kershaw has never started an All-Star Game. I’m presuming he won’t this year, either, because he’s on the mound Tuesday and thus would be lined up to pitch in L.A.’s final game before the break on Sunday.

Kershaw (12-2, 2.32) leads the NL in wins and is second in innings (116.1), strikeouts (135), ERA (2.32) and WHIP (0.91). The Cy Young race is between him and Washington’s Max Scherzer, the reigning NL Cy winner, right now. Kershaw is unbeaten in his last 11 starts, and he struck out 12 Angels in his most recent outing, allowing an unearned run and just three hits. Kershaw faced visiting Arizona on April 14 and gave up one run and four hits over 8.1 innings with eight strikeouts in a victory. He is now 13-8 with a 2.66 ERA lifetime against the D-backs.

Arizona could get back star outfielder A.J. Pollock from the DL for Tuesday’s game. He's been on the disabled list with soft-tissue injuries since the middle of May and rehabbing with Triple-A Reno. The Diamondbacks shifted their rotation a bit for this series. Zack Godley, who was set to start the series opener Tuesday, will be pushed back to Wednesday, while Patrick Corbin will slide into the Tuesday slot. If you have any lefties on your staff, you want them facing the Dodgers as they hit right-handers much better than southpaws.

Corbin (6-7, 4.76) has thrown three straight quality starts but has only one win to show for it. Corbin pitched at the Dodgers on April 15 and took the loss, surrendering three earned and nine hits over six innings. Yasiel Puig is 7-for-18 career off Corbin with a homer and five RBIs. Justin Turner is 9-for-24 with two doubles and a homer. Corbin has yet to face rookie sensation Cody Bellinger.
