Dodgers at Diamondbacks (+110)

It’s a potential playoff preview between these NL West rivals. Los Angeles is going to win the division for a fifth straight year and finish with the best record in the National League. That means the Dodgers would get the wild-card winner in the divisional round. And those two wild-card teams as things stand are Colorado and Arizona. I believe each will hold on to a spot; it’s just a matter of who would host that game.

The MLB single-season record for wins is 116 by the 1906 Chicago Cubs and 2001 Seattle Mariners. The Dodgers are 79-32, so on pace for 115 wins. They have won an incredible 44 of their past 51 games and led the majors with a plus-204 run differential. As long as Clayton Kershaw returns healthy, I can’t find a flaw here. Justin Turner leads the NL in hitting and could be the MVP. No Dodger has led the league in average since Tommy Davis won back-to-back crowns in 1962 and 1963 with .346 and .326 marks.

Or maybe the MVP is Cody Bellinger, who could become the third player in MLB history to win Rookie of the Year and the MVP in the same season. Kershaw’s chances of winning another Cy Young might be gone now that he’s hurt. Over the weekend, the Dodgers easily swept three games at the Mets and hit 10 homers, their highest total in a three-game series since 2009, when they homered 10 times at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

L.A. starts Kenta Maeda (10-4, 3.79).  He shut out the Braves on two hits over seven innings last time out and is 5-1 with a 2.20 ERA in his past six starts. Maeda has had trouble with Arizona this year, however, with an 0-1 record and 10.00 ERA in 9 innings. The Snakes are hitting .325 off him. Jake Lamb hammers him, going 9-for-20 career with two homers.

Arizona’s Zack Godley (5-2, 2.86) has been brilliant in his past two outings in not allowing a run over 13 innings at the Cubs and Cardinals. Godley faced the Dodgers on July 5 in L.A. and was a tough-luck loser, giving up one run and three hits over five innings. Turner is 1-for-9 career against him.

Rockies at Indians (-210)

Colorado will add the designated hitter for this interleague game. The Rox will need all the offensive help they can get against 2014 Cy Young winner Corey Kluber, who is in the running for another award – but still behind Boston’s Chris Sale. Kluber (9-3, 2.77) is third in the American League in strikeouts (1.72) and ERA while ranking second in WHIP (.095) and complete games. Since returning from a back injury at the beginning of June, Kluber has struck out a whopping 40.7% percent of batters.

Kluber comes off a complete-game win over the Yankees, allowing one run and three hits. He struck out 11, his fourth start in a row with at least that many. That guy is just filthy. Kluber makes his second career start against the Rockies. He faced them on May 30, 2014 and earned the win after allowing just two runs on five hits with a walk and 12 strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work. Kluber is 0-2 in three interleague starts this year despite a 2.14 ERA. He has gotten only three runs of support. Finally, Kluber is 7-1 with a 2.22 ERA at home in 2017, the second-lowest home ERA in the AL.

It’s rookie German Marquez for Colorado (9-4, 4.11), and he hasn’t lost since June 26.  Marquez is working on five straight quality starts. This will be Marquez’s first career look at Cleveland. He’s 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA (46.2 IP, 20 ER), 16 walks and 51 strikeouts in nine starts on the road.

Cleveland was swept by the Rox in a two-game series from June 6-7, falling by scores of 11-3 and 8-1. The Indians have gone just 5-13 in interleague play this season.
