Zack Greinke and the Arizona Diamondbacks open June as MLB odds favorites in their one and only stop this season in the Sunshine State against the Miami Marlins.

MLB Season Record: 23-33 (-11.46)

Locked in a tight division race, the Arizona Diamondbacks make their final stop on an 11-game road trip this weekend with a 4-game series in Miami against the Marlins. Thursday’s lid-lifter is scheduled for a 7:10 PM (ET) first pitch, and making his first pitch of the 2017 season will be Miami’s Jeff Locke. Zack Greinke opposes him for Arizona, the Diamondbacks priced -117 at 5Dimes, after opening a little higher, and 8 for the total.

Tied with Colorado for second in the NL West just a half-game behind the Dodgers, the Diamondbacks reach Miami after splitting a 4-game series in Milwaukee and taking 2 of 3 in Pittsburgh. The Marlins are 11½ out in the NL East, but closed May on a solid 7-3 run.

Locke Plugged Into Marlins Rotation, Worley Sent To ’Pen

It’s been a pretty steady season for Greinke with the exception of a couple of hiccups, one of those this past Saturday in Milwaukee (5.1 IP, 5 ER). The Diamondbacks are 7-4 with him on the mound, which is only good enough for a 2.5 unit ROI against the MLB odds, but they could easily be 9-2. Greinke has faced the Marlins wearing four different uniforms now (Royals, Brewers, Dodgers, Diamondbacks), and his teams have won all seven starts thanks in large part to his 2.98 ERA (48.2 IP).

Locke is being activated from the DL to make his first start of 2017 after sitting the first two months with left shoulder trouble. It will be Locke’s first career appearance in something other than a Pirates jersey, and fifth career start against Arizona with the previous four split and the lefty posting a 7.14 ERA. He worked his way back into shape with four starts recently down on the farm, overwhelming Single-A and Double-A hitters with 22 Ks and a 1.77 ERA in 20.1 frames.

Rivalry Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

This season marks the 20th anniversary of the first meeting between these former expansion franchises, and it’s Arizona with the slight advantage (76-69) long-term after Miami won 4 of 6 a year ago. The Marlins got their brooms out at home, two games failing to breech the totals. The Diamondbacks swept a 4-spot here in 2015, three of those matchups also cashing for ‘under’ bettors.

It’s still going to be in the upper 80s with a few clouds and slight chance of rain at game time, so expect the roof to be latched down at Marlins Park.  I’m going to stick with the recent tendencies for totals in this series with my free baseball pick.
