St. Louis is the site for a weekend series between disappointing squads, and the Cardinals are favored on the MLB odds in Friday’s series opener against the Mets.

MLB Season Record: 43-46 (-2.31)

Plenty of teams have been disappointments during the first half of the 2017 campaign, but two of the biggest busts are the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals. Each was expected to contend for their respective division titles, yet here we are heading into the final weekend before the All-Star Game, and they’re both playing sub-.500 baseball.

Maybe one or the other can break out in St. Louis the next three days and build momentum that will carry them into the second half of the season. Friday’s series opener (8:15 PM ET) features a couple of rising stars on the mound in Jacob deGrom and Carlos Martinez, Bookmaker tagging the Cardinals -111 with an ‘under’ leaning 8 for the total.

DeGrom Seeking 1st Win At Busch

Following a rough close to May and equally sour beginning to June, deGrom found a groove and has been one of the top pitchers in the game the past few weeks. He brings a 4-game win streak into this one, surrendering just three runs while whiffing 31 over the course of those 32 innings. The latest was a 7-inning performance that included 12 strikeouts as -260 chalk on MLB betting boards vs. the Phillies. The park in St. Louis has been trouble for the young righty, deGrom losing both starts here with an 11.00 ERA.

Martinez has done some of his best work this year in St. Louis, recording a 2.42 ERA in nine assignments at Busch compared to 4.13 on the road. The home crowd wasn’t much help last weekend, however, when Bryce Harper banged a couple of homers to send Martinez and the Cardinals to a 7-2 loss, the third traight setback for St. Louis with the young Dominican on the hill. Martinez is 3-1 with a 1.25 ERA in four starts and three relief appearances vs. the Mets.

Rivalry Trends, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

The clubs split their season series a year ago, each winning 2 of 3 games on their home diamonds. St. Louis has won the last eight series played at the latest rendition of Busch Stadium, and four of the last five games played here went ‘over’ the totals. One of the Cardinals’ wins last year at home was an 8-1 final in which Martinez thoroughly dominated deGrom and the Mets.

There could be a passing shower in Arch City during the afternoon hours, but that should clear out by first pitch and leave a muggy 88° by game time with a 10-12 mph NW breeze (LF corner to RF corner). I had my mind on the ‘under’ when I first saw the pitching matchup, and nothing I’ve said has convinced me to go the other way with my free baseball pick.
