Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Thursday, April 15, 2021 – 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium
Baseball's finest team has raced out to a hot start as they pursue back-to-back championships for Los Angeles. The Dodgers are 9-2 already, and are set to host one of the weaker NL rosters again Thursday night. The Colorado Rockies are just 3-8 and have little positive going for them.
No one is surprised the Dodgers are this good. Their roster is better than some Diamond Dynasty franchises in baseball's signature video game "MLB The Show." The combination of hitting and pitching completely overwhelms teams on a nightly basis.
This dream team could challenge baseball's long-held regular season win record if they stay healthy. They boast four aces in Clayton Kershaw, Trevor Bauer, Walker Buehler and Julio Urias. And fifth starter Dustin May is far from a slouch as a power pitcher.
Their defensive numbers are as good as anyone could hope thus far. They're third in runs allowed, seventh in batting average allowed, and sixth in home runs. Their strikeout rate is low (19th) but should continue to do better as the season progresses.
However the even better aspect of the roster is the offense. Mashing in 5.86 runs per game with the league's best average and OPS rate, their well-oiled machine can beat a pitcher in many ways. They have the power and contact throughout the lineup to drive opposing managers insane with frustration on how to match up against them.
Urias has been on fire this season and is set to take the mound. He's allowed only four runs in 12.2 innings pitched, but 12 hits. His timely pitching has gotten him out of some tough situations but he can be trusted to find more of a rhythm since the outcomes are still stronger than the process.
Rockies Looking For Answers
Colorado's had a brutal start to 2021. Their 0-4 record on the road is a dooming sign of things to come and the MLB betting lines agree. This organization continues struggling to build a sustained winner away from Coors Field and it's costly.
At 3-8 and with a below-average lineup and bad pitching staff, this season is about developing the young guys. Austin Gomber takes the mound this game and has been a bright spot along with Jon Gray. But the bullpen has been awful until they can reach closer Daniel Bard.
The lineup is filled with players in their mid-to-late twenties. That's disappointing considering their current standing. It's fair to wonder if Charlie Blackmon will be moved sooner than later so the team can revamp their roster around Ryan McMahon and prospects.
There's simply not much else to look forward to with this team unless they get hot at the plate or with their broken bullpen. Gomber is good enough to keep them close as long as he's in the game but at some point the offense has to knock Urias out with at least three or four runs. The recipe to beat the Dodgers rarely features a low-scoring affair.
We'll take the Dodgers to cover this 1.5-run spread with a decent return for our MLB Picks. Sharps may be tempted to play the Rockies' fat moneyline but it's not a worthwhile investment when the talent gap is so large. There are better value plays Thursday night.
