It's the second game of a set in Milwaukee on Wednesday as the Brewers continue to chase the Cubs in the NL Central Division and the Cardinals hold out hope for a playoff spot.

MLB Season Record: 53-58-2 (-3.52)

Tuesday’s series opener in Milwaukee found the Brewers doing all of their scoring in the first inning then holding on to secure a 3-2 victory over their division rivals from St. Louis. Bookmaker closed Milwaukee on a -116 money line, and the loss left the Cardinals 8 games behind Arizona in the NL Wild Card chase and fading out of the playoff picture.

A late decision by St. Louis on its pitcher tonight kept the MLB odds for the second of a 3-game set off the overnight board. The Cardinals eventually settled on Luke Weaver (0-1, 4.50) to toe the rubber, while Brent Suter (2-1, 2.40) does the same for Milwaukee, setting up a battle of young hurlers as the Brewers hope to close the gap between them and the Chicago Cubs at the top of the NL Central race.

Both Pitchers Seeking First Wins In Rivalry

St. Louis hoped to bring veteran Adam Wainwright off the DL for this contest, but his back just wasn’t ready after throwing on the side Monday. Weaver was up earlier in July for a couple of relief appearances, then stepped in for Wainwright last week when the Cardinals dropped a 4-0 home decision to the Diamondbacks. The former Florida State star Weaver faced the Brewers twice last season, and though St. Louis lost both games, pitched well (12 IP, 4 ER).

Suter has been solid since being inserted into the rotation in early July, the lefty fashioning a 1.50 ERA in five assignments, three of which the Brewers won. The Harvard grad was outstanding last Friday in the series opener at Wrigley, shutting the Cubs out for seven innings in a 2-1 win that came with Milwaukee carrying a +130 return on the MLB odds. He faced the Cards once as a starter in June, losing that effort, and tossed four scoreless innings against them out of the bullpen in April. Five of his six starts finished ‘under’ the totals.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Calling balls and strikes tonight should be Vic Carapazza, a 7-year vet who has developed a reputation for having a quick thumb but has yet to eject any Cardinals or Brewers. The New York native has a slight ‘under’ tendency this season (8-11 O/U), that trend even more pronounced the higher the total is set (0-3 O/U with totals 9½+). Three of his last four plate assignments at Miller Park failed to reach the totals.

The lid was off Miller Park last night and could be again this evening assuming afternoon showers in the forecast come and go in time. Milwaukee should be chalked in the -140 to -150 range for this one, and I’m expecting a 9-9½ run total which has me leaning to the low side for my free baseball pick.
