The Red Sox are favored on the MLB odds to win their eighth consecutive game Wednesday when they wrap up a short mini-series on the road against the Rays.

MLB Season Record: 58-58-3 (+1.85)

Owners of baseball’s longest current win streak, the Boston Red Sox are beginning to pull away from the rest of the AL East. They’ll look to add to their lead Wednesday night at the Tampa Bay Rays, BetOnline listing the Sox -120 with a 9-run total in the 7:10 PM (ET) duel between Rick Porcello (5-14, 4.70) and Jake Odorizzi (6-4, 4.47).

Chris Sale and Craig Kimbrel combined to strike out 16 Rays in Tuesday series opener as Boston rolled to its 7th straight win, 2-0. The Red Sox closed as prohibitive -210 favorites on the MLB odds, and the win evened the two rivals 6-6 for this season. After totals split when the Rays took 3 of 4 in St. Pete just before the All-Star break, Tuesday’s ‘under’ left things 5-10 O/U under the lid at The Trop dating back to last season.

Red Sox 0-3 In ’17 When Porcello Takes On Tampa Bay

Porcello stopped a 4-game losing streak the last time out, though he needed plenty of help from his offense in the 9-5 decision after being relieved in the sixth with the White Sox scoring all of their runs. He actually pitched better in the four losses (29 IP, 9 ER) but didn’t get much help from Boston bats. having allowed five runs. The first of those four losses came on the road against the Rays, Porcello taking a tough-luck 1-0 loss. That was the third time Tampa beat him in 2017 after the Red Sox won four of his five starts vs. the Rays a year ago.

Odorizzi is being activated from his second DL stint of the campaign for this start, the right-hander missing the last couple of weeks with a bad back after sitting for a little more than two weeks in April with a hamstring injury. He pulled the hamstring after just an inning in an April start at Fenway, and was bombed by the BoSox on this diamond in early July, getting yanked in the fifth with seven runs against his ledger. Dustin Pedroia, who also just came off the DL for this series, should be licking his chops and anxious to get to the plate with a .433 lifetime average (13-30) and three homers against Odorizzi.

Umpire Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

Tony Randazzo sets up behind the dish for the 14th time this year, his 13 previous plate assignments running 7-4-2 O/U/P. Home sides are 9-4 overall when the Chicago native calls balls and strikes, but just 1-2 when lined as the underdogs.

Both hurlers have been money-burners in 2017 and have contrasting results in the totals column. This total could dip to 8½ at all books by game time, and is already there at Heritage where I’ll play ‘under’ for my free baseball pick.
