The big sticks were out Friday for the Mets who walloped the Rockies in Game 1 of their series, and New York is once again the favorite on the MLB odds in Saturday’s matchup.

Bud Black hoped the All-Star break would help lift the Colorado Rockies out of a funk that saw them lose 13-of-18 before the short vacation. It did not have the desired results Friday when the New York Mets routed Colorado to leave the Rockies manager scratching his head going into Saturday night’s tilt (7:10 PM ET). Tyler Chatwood opposes Seth Lugo on the mound, New York running around -115 with 9 for the scoreboard mark.

TJ Rivera doubled and homered to fuel the Mets offense while Jacob deGrom worked eight strong innings in a 14-2 decision Friday evening, the Mets living up to the -160 closing line at Bookmaker. The series has run in spurts recently, New York reeling off 11-straight wins from 2014-15 before the Rockies took 6-of-7 last year. With the Game 1 result, the ‘over’ has now cashed four of the last six matchups in New York.

Chatwood Aims To End 3-Game Skid

While the Rockies got off to that fine start through May, Chatwood wasn’t really along for the ride. He has now dropped his last three outings to leave Colorado 7-11 with him on the mound, and bettors off 5 units against the MLB odds. The Californian went through a very good stretch just before the skid, Colorado winning four of his six assignments and all but one of them going into Chatwood’s quality start column. He has done well against the Mets over the course of his career, the Rockies winning three of his four assignments while he pitched to a 1.95 ERA.

Lugo will be appearing in from of the home fans for just a second time in 2017 after he got a late start due to beginning the season on the DL. Two of his five starts came against the tough Nationals lineup, and both went into the loss column. The 27-year-old righthander has only faced the Rockies once in his career, and that came out of the bullpen here last year when Colorado scored twice during his 3-inning stint.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

A fill-in since 2014, Chris Segal should have the plate tonight. He is taking Bill Welke’s place in this crew and brings an 8-4 O/U mark for totals into the tilt, home favorites also running 6-2 when the Virginian is behind the mask. It’s Segal’s fourth time to call balls and strikes at Citi Field, the previous three going 1-2 O/U.

It should be mostly clear skies tonight in Flushing, temps hanging in the low-80s for most of the contest with a light NW breeze (in from left). A win tonight would give New York 100 in the rivalry, and I believe they’ll get it with my free baseball pick on the home side.
