Madison Bumgarner has been bumped up a day in San Francisco’s rotation, and that has kept the MLB odds from being released for the series finale in Los Angeles.

You won’t often hear about managers wanting their pitchers to bat, but that is the reason behind San Francisco’s Bruce Bochy adjusting his rotation for the series finale between the Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. The switch means Madison Bumgarner (1-4, 3.38) will now face Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-6, 4.17) for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball broadcast, and delayed the MLB odds release for the tilt.

Los Angeles took the first two games of the weekend set to even the season series between the clubs, 6-6. Corey Seager’s two blasts fueled a 6-4 Dodgers win on Friday, and LA posted a 2-1 decision Saturday in a pitching duel that Bookmaker closed -310 on the home side. Four of the last six matchups in LA between the rivals have gone ‘over’ the totals.

Home Runs Have Plagued Ryu In LA

Bumgarner was originally expected to open San Fran’s short set in Oakland on Monday when the Giants would’ve been using the American League DH rules. Even by moving up a day, the southpaw will be pitching on his normal cycle with four days off since picking up his first win of the year earlier this week against the Pirates. This will be his first appearance of 2017 against the Dodgers, Bumgarner standing 3-4 with a 3.19 ERA in his last eight road starts in the rivalry.

Ryu was activated from the DL this past Monday after sitting almost a month with a foot contusion. He worked five innings against the Twins, allowing two runs and not figuring into the decision as the Dodgers rallied in the eighth for a 6-4 victory. Ryu faced the Giants once this year in San Francisco where he lost a tough 2-1 decision in a duel with Matt Cain, tonight’s original Giants starter. Buster Posey and Hunter Pence have given him trouble over the years, that pair combining for a .380 average (19-50).

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Crew chief Larry Vanover is expected be under the mask tonight, his second plate assignment at Chavez Ravine this season with the first going ‘over’ with plenty of room to spare. Four of his last six games behind the dish never made it to the totals, however, leaving him 6-7-1 O/U/P on the year. The Kentucky native worked three games in Los Angeles during the 2016 campaign, including a Giants-Dodgers showdown, and all three were ‘under’ winners.

The weather looks great for this late-afternoon start in LA, and both hurlers should benefit from the creeping shadows as the sun sets. The money line should be tight with a total around 8, and I’m liking the ‘under’ for my free baseball pick.
