A doubleheader is scheduled in Washington today when the Nationals close out their series against the New York Mets, MLB odds slowed for both games due to pitching matchups.

Foiled by Mother Nature in July, the New York Mets and Washington Nationals are slated to play two games today and the late pitching assignments have delayed MLB odds for both games. ESPN will broadcast the night cap that finds Seth Lugo (5-3, 4.85) going for the Mets against Washington’s Tanner Roark (10-8, 4.64)

A pitching duel opened the series Friday night, New York scoring three late runs to post a 4-2 decision in a game Bookmaker closed the Mets -140. Washington bounced right back with a 9-4 romp on Saturday, a big first inning and the left arm of Gio Gonzalez behind that victory. The win left the Nationals 10-4 against the Mets this season, totals in DC running 4-2-1 O/U/P entering play Sunday.

Roark Has Been Better On Road Than At Home

A sore shoulder has kept Lugo off the field the past couple of weeks, his last start coming August 11 in Philadelphia where the 27 year old worked into the sixth and allowed five runs, a no-decision for him but ultimately a win for the Mets. It was a similar performance for Lugo in Washington on July 4, only he suffered the loss by allowing six runs in five frames of an 11-4 Nationals triumph. He’s 1-2 with a 4.35 ERA in three career starts and a relief appearance vs. the Nats.

Roark has helped Washington to three wins in his last four trips to the mound, the most recent coming earlier this week in Houston where the old Fighting Illini pitched into the sixth and allowed two earned runs in a 4-3 dubya. It was a 4-3 Nationals win in New York back in April, Roark’s only start against the Mets this year, the righthander taking a no-decision in that appearance (6.2 IP, 3 ER).

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Alan Porter is expected to call balls and strikes in the series finale, three of his last four plate assignments finishing ‘under’ the totals to leave him 10-11-1 O/U/P on the season (0-4 O/U on 8-8½ run totals). The Pennsylvania native is working the dish for the first time in DC for the first time this season, visiting teams and ‘over’ bettors coming out on top in five of his last seven games behind the mask at Nationals Park.

A few clouds are in the picture, but there’s no rain in the forecast today in the nation’s capital. The weatherman is calling for temps in the low-to-mid 70s for the first pitch in the nightcap and a light easterly breeze (1B to 3B). I’m expecting Washington to be -150 chalk or so with a 9 run total, and lean to the ‘under’ for my free baseball pick.
