The Dodgers remain hot while the Diamondbacks are scuffling as they head to the finale of their 3-game set in Phoenix, where Los Angeles is favored on the baseball odds board.

MLB Season Record: 58-59-3 (+0.85)

This is a huge homestand for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and they’d love to finish off the first leg of it by taking the rubber game in their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. It won’t be easy, if MLB odds are any indication, with Yu Darvish (7-9, 3.81) and the Dodgers posted around -165 against Arizona and rookie lefty Anthony Banda (1-1, 3.86), the current 9½-run total showing signs of dipping a half by game time.

Jake Lamb’s second homer Tuesday came with the bases packed with fellow Snakes to lift Arizona to a 6-3 win in the series opener. Alex Wood and a pair of relievers leveled things Wednesday with a 3-2 LA win, Bookmaker closing the Diamondbacks very slight -109 chalk in that one. Los Angeles is up 7-5 in the season series, totals running 2-3 O/U at Chase Field.

Banda & Darvish Each Coming Off A Win

Darvish was rock-solid in his Dodgers debut last Friday, tossing seven scoreless innings while striking out 10 Mets in a 6-0 decision. He was working on extra rest following the trade from Texas and will aim for his first back-to-back wins since late May in this one. Darvish hasn’t faced Arizona since a couple of interleague matchups in 2013, the soon-to-be 31 year old striking out 14 in his lone appearance at Chase Field that ended with a no-decision.

Arizona will entertain the Cubs this weekend, the Saturday tilt part of our free baseball picks lineup, then has the Astros in town to begin next week when they hope to have Robbie Ray (concussion) back in the rotation. Banda is filling in for Ray currently and coming off his first MLB dubya in San Francisco last Friday (6 IP, 1 ER). He walked four and hit a batter but was helped out by a couple of double plays as he prepares to face LA for the first time.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

With Joe West serving a ridiculous suspension, Hunter Wendelstedt is the acting crew chief and will work the plate Thursday. The 20-year vet brings a very slight ‘over’ lean into the contest (11-9-1 O/U/P) after four of his last six behind the mask sailed past the marks. Road favorites are 5-0 when he calls balls and strikes, and the D-Backs have dropped five of his last seven plate assignments in Phoenix.

Another hot one in the desert will keep the roof closed at Chase Field. Darvish looked rejuvenated in his first game for LA and that should carry over to this start. Let’s go with a run-line play in the series finale.
