Coming off an extra-inning affair Saturday, the Yankees and Red Sox will work overtime with a twin bill on Sunday, Boston favored on the MLB odds in the evening clash.

As if playing a doubleheader to close out the weekend set wasn’t enough, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox gave fans at Fenway Park some extra baseball Saturday when the clubs went 13 innings and nearly six hours before it was decided. They’ll get right back to work this afternoon to make up an April rainout, then play the regularly-scheduled game at 8:05 PM (ET) with ESPN’s cameras on hand. Masahiro Tanaka goes against David Price in the second contest, Boston priced -137 at BetOnline with an 8½ run total.

New York spoiled a great performance by Chris Sale yesterday, Matt Holliday’s solo shot in the ninth forcing extras and then plating three in the 13th for a 4-1 triumph. The Red Sox took Friday’s series opener by a 5-4 count thanks to a walk-off walk in a game Boston was favored with a -135 money line on the MLB odds. The Yankees have won three of the four games played in Beantown this year, Friday’s Boston win the only one to go ‘over’ the totals.

Price Has Struggled Against Yanks Since Coming To Boston

Tanaka stumbled last Sunday in a 5-3 loss to the Brewers, the righthander failing to get through the fifth and surrendering all five Milwaukee runs. He had won his three previous starts with some solid pitching, combining to work 21 innings while allowing only three runs to the Rangers, White Sox and Blue Jays. Tanaka was brilliant in Boston back in late-April, tossing a complete game shutout and the Red Sox only collecting three hits. That left him 3-1 with a 3.31 ERA in six career starts at Fenway.

Price pitched well at Tampa Bay a week ago, tossing six innings with only two runs coming home. It wasn’t good enough for a win as the bullpen dropped the ball in a 5-3 Rays triumph. This will be his seventh assignment vs. the Yankees since joining the Red Sox, New York winning four of the previous six and knocking Price around pretty well, taking him deep seven times and leaving him with an 8.30 ERA in a little less than 35 innings.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Just as teams are allowed to call up an extra player for doubleheaders, umpire crews can do the same. Should they stick to the usual rotation, however, Adrian Johnson will have the plate for the nightcap. His games have run 11-7 O/U this season, his lone dish assignment in Boston about three months ago going well past a 9½ run total.

A nice afternoon in Boston should give way to a nice evening, a bit on the humid side but with temps in the mid-70s and a light southerly breeze (out to left). Both closers have blown leads in the first two games, and the bullpens were stretched out Saturday. I’m behind the two offenses for my free baseball pick under the lights on Sunday.
