While some teams in the MLB have cemented their spots for in the post-season, others are in desperation mode. Follow our predictions in today's MLB Picks of the Day.

See who we think are worthy of choosing for tonight’s baseball picks.

Tampa Bay Rays (87-69) at New York Yankees (82-74)

Mission Impossible?

Sunday’s loss on Mariano Rivera Day really took the Yankees out of playoff contention. People are emphasizing the importance of this series, but even though the Yankees are 4 games out with 6 games to go, they’re actually 5 games behind the Rays. If New York were to sweep this series, they would actually help Texas and possibly Kansas City. It’s never over until it’s over, but things look fairly bleak for New York where the post-season is concerned.

Tampa Bay is also coming off of an emotional win in which they came back from a 3-1 deficit to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday afternoon to win 5-4 as James Loney put an exclamation point on a great season with a walkoff pinch hit home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to win the game.

The Rays haven’t had one stand out star this season, but they’re in a prime position to take the wild card due to the timely hitting of players like Will Myers, Ben Zobrist, Evan Longoria, and the consistency of James Loney.

James Loney

Loney is having a career year and up until the month of September, had been hitting above .300. Currently, Loney is hitting .296 with 13 HR and 71 RBI. These may not seem like huge numbers, but without Loney , the Rays would be on the outside looking in where the post-season is concerned.

Tampa Bay starter, Matt Moore (15-4, 3.34), has been a beast all season long, but is coming off of a terrible outing in which he allowed 5 runs, 7 hits, and 3 home runs in 4 innings pitched in a loss to Texas. I look for the Yankees to play with some emotion tonight as they can’t lose another game and they’ve had an extra day to think about Sunday’s crushing loss.

MLB Pick: Bet the New York Yankees on the money line, +106 at Bet365

Houston Astros (51-106) at Texas Rangers (85-71)

Big Win For Texas

The Rangers are coming off of a huge 12-0 victory over the lowly Astros as Alex Rios hit for the cycle and Texas is now just 1 game behind Cleveland for the final wild card spot in the American League. Even though Cleveland has a very easy schedule, the Rangers can only think of the task at hand and that’s to win each game on a game-by-game basis. Tonight, they have the guy that they want taking the baseball in Yu Darvish (13-9, 2.81) and the Rangers are a huge -335 betting odds favorite. Is this game an automatic win against a team that’s given up on the season?

Grinding

Even though Darvish has some nasty stuff, he’s been laboring as of late, losing 4 out of his last 5 decisions. His last win came in his last start, but he was lucky to get it due to run support. Darvish was super-wild, allowing 6 walks and had to use 109 pitches just to make it to the 5th inning. He can’t pitch like that here or the Astros have players that can capitalize on a poor performance. Look for Darvish to have a strong outing as the Astros have lost 10 games in a row and aren’t the caliber of Tampa Bay.

The moneyline isn’t an option in this game, therefore we’ll lay the juice and take Texas with the runline for our sports picks.
