New York Yankees
The Yankees beat the Tigers 8-4 yesterday with home runs from Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran to even this series. CC Sabathia allowed just three runs and four hits in six innings to end Detroit's three-game winning streak and now New York will try to improve to 4-2. The Yankees are currently fifth in the majors with 27 runs scored, 11th with a .271 batting average and fifth with seven home runs. New York is 18th in MLB with a 4.37 ERA and 13th with a 1.26 WHIP.

Detroit Tigers
As mentioned above, the Tigers suffered their first loss of the season yesterday but they still lead the AL Central with a 3-1 record. Mike Pelfrey made his first start for Detroit and allowed six runs and eight hits in just 3 2/3 innings and the offense could not get things going. The Tigers rank 14th in the majors with 19 runs scored, first with a .325 batting average and ninth with six home runs. Detroit is 11th in MLB with a 3.10 ERA and 10th with a 1.17 WHIP.

Pitching Matchup
Masahiro Tanaka (0-0, 3.18 ERA) vs. Justin Verlander (0-0, 4.50 ERA)
Masahiro Tanaka gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings to get a no-decision in the season opener against the Astros. Tanaka has done a good job when healthy, but being injury-prone hasn't allowed New York to maximize his starts. The Japanese right-hander struggled in two outings against the Tigers last season, going 0-1 and giving up eight runs on 13 hits in 11 1/3 innings.

If Justin Verlander returns to form, the Tigers will be one of the teams to beat in the AL Central. He started the season on the right track, allowing just three runs on three hits over six innings against the Marlins but it remains to be seen if he can be his old self all season long. Verlander hasn't beaten the Yankees since 2012, going 5-7 with a 4.03 ERA in 17 starts.

Betting Trends
The Yankees are 1-1 in road games, 1-0 in night-games and 3-1 against right-handers. The Tigers are 1-1 in home games, 3-1 in games played on a grass field and 2-0 against right-handed starters. The 'Over' is 4-1 in New York's five games and 3-1 in Detroit's four games.

Final Analysis
The Tigers are favored on the MLB odds board at -120 while the Yankees are at +111 and the total is set at 7.5. These teams have split the first two games of this series, with the Tigers winning the opener 4-0 on Friday and the Yankees winning today's game 8-4.

There will be two aces on the mound but recent betting trends and the way these offenses are hitting suggests that Over 7.5 is a solid play. Sunday's weather forecast indicates possible periods of snow, rain and sleet but I'll make a lean on the Over for my MLB picks
