Jeff Samardzija has thrived on the mound at PNC Park, which provides the Chicago Cubs a major edge over the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday night. Let’s take a closer look at the MLB betting lines for this National League Central affair.

Troubles away from home
Chicago is winless in its last 14 road series overall dating back to last season, as it looks to move past a 4-2 setback to Pittsburgh as +120 underdogs Wednesday, while going 'under' the betting total for the first time in four contests. Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo will need to lead the offense in hopes of earning a split of this four-game set, as he’s batting .364 with three home runs, and eight RBIs over his last nine games.

MLB handicappers will find that the squad is 5-13 on the road with a betting total of 7, or less, during the 2014 campaign.

 Fallen into a pattern
Pittsburgh has alternated wins and losses over its last four games, while it has gone 8-9 at home with a money line of -100 to -125 this year. 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen leads all active players with a .438 home average since April 21, while he’s gone 10-for-26 in his career against tonight’s opposing starter.

Its important to point out that the franchise is a disappointing 11-13 versus teams with a losing record.

Cubs starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija (2-5, 2.54 ERA) is coming off a 5-2 home victory over the Miami Marlins last time out, as he gave up two runs and five hits over seven strong innings of work. The right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.79 ERA in six road appearances, with opposing hitters batting .259 against him (.206 at home). In five career starts at this venue, Samardzija has compiled a 3-1 record and 0.69 ERA.

Pirates starting pitcher Edinson Volquez (3-5, 4.27 ERA) has watched the team alternate wins and losses over his last seven trips to the mound, as he attempts to recover from a 9-3 home defeat to the Milwaukee Brewers. The right-hander has put together a 2-3 record, and 3.74 ERA in eight home appearances (seven starts)—issuing 14 walks, and striking out 27 batters in 43.1 combined frames. In nine games (eight starts) versus the Cubs, Volquez has tallied a perfect 5-0 record and 3.60 ERA.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Cubs as one of their MLB picks, as they’ve gone 7-3 in their last 10 games following a loss.
