Tailing MLB teams with momentum has been a consistent theme of our MLB Picks of the Day.

Should I go away from that mindset as other teams are in desperation mode to make the playoffs? Stay tuned as I make my sports picks for Thursday.

New York Yankees (78-68) at Baltimore Orioles (77-68)

Leapfrogging the Orioles and Indians

With home runs from Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson, and Robinson Cano, the Yankees have managed to come from far back in the American League East Division to pass the Orioles and the Indians in their quest for the last wildcard spot. New York has taken 2 out of 3 games in this series and both teams need this game badly.

Opportunity for the O’s?

The starting pitching takes a major drop for the Bombers as Phil Hughes (4-13, 5.11) was told after yesterday’s win that he indeed is the man that will be taking the rubber tonight at Camden Yards against a tough Orioles lineup that features a young up and coming Manny Machado, slugger Adam Jones, and the league’s leading home run hitter in Chris Davis. If Hughes shows any sign of crumbling, manager Joe Girardi will yank him immediately.

Hughes has been used in relief appearances in his last 2 games and got beaten up by the Red Sox on the 6th of September in which he allowed 4 runs and 3 hits in just 1/3 of an inning. The Yankees can’t feel too confident about Hughes starting.

Look for Alex Rodriguez to remain in the DH role as the Yankees have come alive since his surprising return. Rodriguez injured himself sliding into home plate 2 games back and the Yanks want to use caution as they need Alex’s bat in the lineup. In his last 3 games, Arod is 5 for 12 with 3 runs scored, 2 HR and 3 RBI.

The Orioles start Wei-Yin Chen and he faced the Yankees on September 1st, allowing 3 runs, 4 hits, and 5 walks in just 4 innings pitched. This game could come down to the offenses.

Yesterday’s loss was truly demoralizing for Baltimore and look for the Yankees to put the dagger in their hearts tonight.

MLB Pick: Bet the Yankees +140 on the money line at Bet365

(Odds makers missed the boat by making the Orioles such a heavy favorite)

San Francisco Giants (66-80) at Los Angeles Dodgers (85-60)

Greinke Is a Beast

This game is very clear cut. You have the Los Angeles Dodgers who are having one of their best seasons in decades facing the San Francisco Giants who are having one of their worst seasons in a very long time. To compound that, Zack Greinke (14-3, 2.78) takes the mound for Los Angeles and this game should be nothing short of a “slam dunk” for the Dodgers who are playing at home.

The only thing against the Dodgers in this game is that they’re coming off of a 4-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in their last game while the Giants are coming off of a 4-3 victory over Colorado.

San Francisco sends Matt Cain (8-9, 4.37) to the mound and although he’s had a disappointing season, Cain has been pitching well as of late. He’s hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a start since the beginning of July. Even though guys like Hunter Pence and Adrian Gonzalez have been hitting well as of late, this game should be a low scoring affair.

The total in the MLB odds is a very low 6.5. I’m going to buy a half-run and take the ‘Under’ on this game for my baseball picks.
