David Ortiz showed that either he’s still on PEDs or he’s still a major talent as he hit 2 home runs to defeat the Detroit Tigers, 20-4. Pablo Sandoval, who is not known for his power hitting, raised the bar even higher as he hit 3 home runs as the lowly San Francisco Giants beat up on the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, 13-6. Let’s see if we see more high scoring games today.
Two Teams That Despise Each Other
One of the most intense rivalries in sports resumes at the Bronx, as the New York Yankees continue to put on the pressure and attempt to gain the last wild card spot. The Boston Red Sox are coming off of a 20-4 demolition of the Detroit Tigers. This game couldn’t see two teams come in on greater highs.
Even though the Yankees are looking to make the playoffs, they still have to have the Sunday Night Game in which Ryan Dempster beaned Alex Rodriguez with a baseball in the back of their mind. That said, the Yanks start a red hot pitcher in Ivan Nova (8-4, 2.88), who is coming off of a complete 3-game hit shutout of the Orioles and I don’t think that the Yankees want to lose Nova.
In other words, if there is a retaliation, it will be by the bullpen or possibly a different game. Nova is too hot a commodity to risk.
Nova will have to put forth a solid effort as not only are the Red Sox a hitting machine, the Yankees almost gave away Wednesday’s game against the White Sox, a 6 -5 victory, in which legendary closer, Mariano Rivera, had to pitch 4 outs to bail out David Robertson after an outstanding outing by C.C. Sabathia.
With Jake Peavy (11-5, 3.91) against Nova, MLB odds suggest we should see a low scoring game despite the numbers that these two teams are capable of putting up.
(The total is 8.5 and I’m going to buy a half-run)
Tampa Bay Rays (77-61) at Los Angeles Angels (64-74)
I know that Tampa Bay is fighting for the playoffs and are deserving of being the favorite in this game after a 7-1 victory over the Angels on Tuesday, but this is baseball and any team can win on any given day. Tampa Bay isn’t an elite team and to be a -168 sports betting favorite on the Angels home turf is a bit extreme.
The Angels are total underachievers this season but still have one of the better offenses in the majors. They’re 10th in runs, 6th in batting average, and 5th in on-base percentage. Most important of all, they have baseball’s present and future in the name of Mike Trout. This team is capable of scoring 10 runs or more in any game and on any team.
The Rays have the edge in starting pitching as David Price (8-6, 3.30) faces Jerome Williams (5-10, 4.68). Williams is an average major league pitcher that doesn’t have a lot of velocity on his fast ball, but is having an off-season and has beaten teams like the Rays in the past. Price has pitched well, but not nearly to the level of an elite status. He’s been pitching 6 to 7 innings in his last few outings and has given up 2 to 3 runs on the average.
I could see this game going either way and with the Angels at home, I urge you to make a small play on the underdog Los Angeles Angels for your MLB picks.
