The St. Louis Cardinals finally put a stop to the bleeding as they put a beating on the Angels last night, 12-2. The Cardinals will look to make it 2 in a row as they send ace, Adam Wainwright (11-5, 2.22), to the mound as he faces Joe Blanton (2-10, 5.07) in what seems to be a complete mismatch on paper.
Records Are Deceiving
While Wainwright has been the model of consistency all season long, the same can’t be said for Joe Blanton.
After a disastrous start to the season, Blanton has put together 6 quality outings out of his last 7 appearances. He goes deep into games and in that period of time, hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a game. Unfortunately for Blanton, the Angels haven’t been able to give him sufficient run support and that’s why his record is so poor.
Look for Joe Blanton to pitch well here, but Adam Wainwright is just in a class by himself.
Wainwright is coming off of a complete game victory over Oakland and is a true road warrior. On the road, Wainwright is 8-1 with a 2.50 ERA on the road in 10 starts.
The Angels are playing their best ball of the season despite last night’s game. This game will come down to “How effective will Adam Wainwright be against the likes of Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, and Josh Hamilton?”
As statistics will show you, the pitcher always has the advantage. Pujols and Hamilton haven’t been playing at peak performance and that’s an understatement.
For your MLB picks in this game, go with Wainwright and the Redbirds; St. Louis has enough offense to crack the “Blanton Code” of recent success.

Best Pitcher In the Game?
Justin Verlander has had a nice season, but not nearly what people had expected out of him.
“JV” has been slumping as of late and not getting that much need run support from big bats such as Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder during his starts.
In his last 3 starts, Verlander has given up 11 runs on 23 hits in 18 innings. In that time, he had 1 loss and 2 no-decisions. An excuse can be made in that he was facing some of the best teams that the American League East Division has to offer, but JV is supposed to mow down all comers. Even though Toronto sits last in the AL East, they’ve had their own winning streak and this could possibly be another tough game for Verlander.
The Jays are coming off of a 6-2 defeat to Detroit in which Victor Martinez and Alex Avila led the way for the Tigers. Avila hit a 3 run home run in the 2nd inning that basically decided the outcome of the game early.
One thing that can be said for the Blue Jays is that they haven’t been intimidated by Verlander in the past.
Edwin Encarnacion has the worst average for Jays hitters against Verlander at 2 for 16, but those 2 hits were home runs. Jose Reyes is a career 3 for 4 off of JV while the other top 3 hitters in the lineup (excluding Encarnacion) hit at least .286 against Verlander.
The power hitting of Detroit usually decides the outcome in most of their games, but this game will come down to “Can Justin Verlander rebound after 3 consecutive poor performances?” Ultimately, to get Verlander and the Tigers at these odds is a bargain for your sports picks.
